Short Stories

Official short fiction set across the thirteen zones of Runeterra.

About short stories

Riot publishes short fiction the way a magazine does: a few thousand words, usually one character, usually one turning point. They accompany champion releases, reworks and seasonal events, and they are where most of the world building actually happens.

The short stories are the reason Runeterra reads as a place rather than a roster. A biography states that a region is at war; a short story puts you in a house in that region and lets you work out what the war costs. Details that never appear anywhere else — currencies, food, funeral rites, what the weather does — almost always come from here.

Many are also available read aloud in the audiobook library, narrated from these same texts.

Most are commissioned around a release, which means the publication date tells you about Riot's calendar and almost nothing about where the story sits in Runeterra's own history. The timeline exists for exactly that reason — it places each story on the in-world line rather than the release one.

The best of them are not about champions at all. A recurring move in Riot's fiction is to put the famous character at the edge of the frame and tell the story through a farmer, a clerk or a soldier, which is how the world gets its texture.

How this index is filed

Every entry below is a work Riot published, linked to the original rather than summarised. The list is filtered the same way the rest of the Archive is: champion spotlights, cosmetic adverts, tournament recordings and storefront promos are filed out, so a search for short stories returns short stories and not a battle-pass trailer that happens to carry the same tag. What you see is the filtered set, not everything the database holds.

Each work is also filed by the zone it belongs to and placed on the in-world timeline, so the same entry can be reached three ways — by form here, by place from the zone pages, and by date from the timeline. Ordering here is by publication, newest first, which is the order Riot released them rather than the order they happen in.

The rest of the Archive

The archive is one set of works cut several ways. Short Stories is one form; the indexes below hold the others, and every entry in all of them is filed by zone and placed on the in-world timeline.

The Archive of Runeterra is the full index, the timeline puts it in in-world order, and the codex wings describe the world these works are set in rather than the works themselves.
