What Hwei Could Mean for Riot’s MMO

Heads up: no class has been announced, and the Riot MMO is still years out (dark since the 2024 reset, with no gameplay ever shown). This is grounded speculation: we read a champion’s canon, kit, and home region for what they hint about the MMO. Sourced, labelled, and honest about the unknowns.

Who Is Hwei?

HweiHwei, the Visionary, paints his emotions into the world and fights with what comes out. He’s an Ionian artist who lived through the massacre of his own temple and came out of it split in half, carrying the beauty he wants to make next to the horror he can’t stop seeing. He makes art to face down Ionia’s criminals, to comfort the people they hurt, and to close the distance to the person who unraveled him.

What makes him worth reading for an MMO is width. Most champions hand you four buttons and a single fantasy. Hwei carries three schools of magic in one body and swaps between them mid-fight, and every character Riot commits to Runeterra this carefully is another concrete piece of the world the MMO has to stand up.

“Calm and chaos—leave everything on the canvas.”

The full story is on Hwei’s biography.

The Class Hwei Points To

On paper HweiHwei is a ranged caster, mage first, with enough utility that players flex him to support. The label matters less than the shape. His three subjects behave like three specs stuffed into one kit: Disaster is damage, Serenity is support, Torment is control. That branch-in-one-class structure is how a modern MMO lets a single archetype cover more than one role without asking you to reroll.

Why this matters for an MMO: a class only works if there’s a power fantasy players will sink dozens of hours into. Hwei already ships with three of them, plus the look and the home region to sell it. The open question is whether Riot would keep his palette-swapping as a real loadout system or flatten it into a fixed action bar.

Reading Hwei’s Kit Into the MMO

A champion’s League abilities are the closest preview we get of how their class might feel. Here’s how each of Hwei’s reads if you drop it onto an MMO action bar. You can check his live numbers on the analytics page.

P Signature of the Visionary

A prime-and-detonate combo. One spell marks a target, a second and different spell completes the signature, and it pops for area magic damage after a short delay. In MMO terms this is the mechanic that stops you spamming one button. You thread two schools together to earn the burst, which is the kind of combo depth a caster wants at the top of the skill curve.

Q Subject: Disaster

Q opens a damage spellbook. Casting it swaps his bar to three tools: a zoning blast, a low-health execute, and a lingering field of fire. Read as an MMO spec, this is the pure DPS branch, the rotation you run when the group just needs the pack dead.

W Subject: Serenity

W opens the support school: a speed stream, a healing pool, and a light that shields and chips at whoever’s near it. This is the reason Hwei flexes to support without switching champion. In an MMO it’s the healer-utility branch, the one that keeps the group standing instead of adding to the damage.

E Subject: Torment

E is the control school: a fear, a zone that roots the moment it opens, and a knockback for peeling. This is the crowd control a raid group leans on. When a demon or a world boss has to sit still for a few seconds, this is the branch that makes it happen.

R Spiraling Despair

The ultimate is a boss-encounter anchor. It latches onto one target and grows a field of despair that slows and damages everything around it, then detonates. You tag the boss, the zone swells, and the whole group fights inside a slow that punishes anyone who stands in it.

Where You’d Play It

Hwei is Ionian, and Ionia is the obvious home for this fantasy. It’s the spirit-touched first land, where the material world and the spirit realm bleed into each other. That overlap is the exact setup for a Spirit Blossom-style outbreak, with spirits and demons spilling through wherever the veil runs thin. A painter-mage hunting the person who broke him belongs in a zone built on grief and haunting, and if the MMO opens anywhere near his story, it opens somewhere like this.

Would You Play It?

Live poll

If Hwei’s archetype became a class in the Riot MMO, would you main it?

None of this is announced. Hwei is a League champion, not an MMO class preview, and no class or region has been confirmed. What’s real is that every character Riot commits to Runeterra tightens the picture of the world they’re building the MMO inside, and a three-school kit like Hwei’s hints louder than most.
