A Loyal General, Then a Spear in the Back
Kalista’s canon already runs in quest order, and every step explains the next.
Kalista, the Spear of Vengeance, is one of the few champions in League, Riot’s five-on-five battle game, whose whole story already runs in the order a questline would: a duty, a voyage, a return, an order, and what came after. Kalista did every job her king gave her until he ordered a slaughter, and the comrade she called on to refuse it with her killed her instead, which is why she now comes back only for people who were betrayed.
Her League biography opens on the after:
An undying specter of wrath and retribution, Kalista is an armored nightmare summoned from the Shadow Isles to hunt deceivers and traitors.

The five steps below follow her canon in order. Each one is a place a player could stand and a thing they would learn there.
Quest Step 1, Guard the King in Camavor
She swore to protect King Viego, and the blade that missed him poisoned the queen.
Camavor is the kingdom she came from, described in Riot’s official Ruination book trailer as “an empire of conquest. Of kings who rule absolute.” The same trailer sets out her first duty:
Kalista, Spear of the Argent Throne, forswore the life of a princess and vowed to guard her uncle, King Viego, from any who would do him harm.
So she gave up a royal life to be the bodyguard of
Viego, the king of Camavor and her uncle. She did the job. When an assassin came for him, she saved him, but the poisoned blade grazed the queen instead. The trailer puts the cost in one line: “She thought she succeeded... she could not protect his heart... his world.”

Legends of Runeterra, Riot’s card game, gave her a champion card that remembers her at this stage: “In life, she was a general, a protector, a hero.” A player starts here, as her soldier, with a wounded queen and a king who will not accept losing her.
Quest Step 2, Sail to Helia for a Cure
Helia’s masters agreed to help, and the queen died before Kalista got home.
The trailer’s next line is the voyage: “Now she searches for a cure... in places of myth and legend.” The place she found was Helia, which our codex describes as “once the learned capital of the Blessed Isles, reduced to ruin by the Ruination in 25 BN.” The Blessed Isles are what the Shadow Isles, the cursed islands of the restless dead, were before that disaster; our codex calls them “once the shining Blessed Isles.”
Kalista sailed across the world to reach Helia, and its masters agreed to help. That is the part of the quest that goes right. By the time she sailed home with that help, the queen was already dead.

Quest Step 3, Return With the King’s Fleet
Viego came back to Helia to demand a resurrection, and the masters refused.
Viego, driven mad by grief, sailed his fleet back to Helia and demanded that the masters bring the queen back. Her biography gives their answer in five words:
Death, they insisted, was final.

Kalista is with the fleet as his general. This is the step where her two duties split: the king she swore to guard, and the people who had already agreed to help her.
Quest Step 4, Refuse the Order at Helia
She refused to kill Helia’s masters, and Hecarim and the Iron Order speared her.
The king ordered Kalista to slaughter the masters. She would not. She turned to
Hecarim, who led the knights of the Iron Order, and asked him to refuse with her. Her biography:
She refused, and called on Hecarim to stand with her… but instead he drove his spear through her armored back. The Iron Order joined him in this treachery, piercing Kalista’s body a dozen times more as she fell.

That is the whole reason she is the Spear of Vengeance. She was not killed by an enemy. She was killed by the one person she asked for help, in front of the knights who then joined in. The same card that called her a hero finishes the thought: “But as flesh gave way, she was left with naught but the blazing fires of retribution--an undying spirit of vengeance.”
Legends of Runeterra recorded what the two say to each other now. Hecarim still has her spear, and he still does not care:
Legends of Runeterra, Kalista and Hecarim
Kalista: “I've been waiting for you, coward!”
Hecarim: “I killed you once. I'll do so again.”
Hecarim: “Kalista, here to return my spear?”
Kalista: “Soon enough, Hecarim.”
Kalista: “No backstabbing! I'll face you as you die!”
Hecarim: “You couldn't stop me then, you can't now!”
Legends of Runeterra, Kalista and Hecarim
Kalista: “Soon you shall face punishment, Hecarim.”
Hecarim: “Not today.”
She was not killed by an enemy. She was killed by the one person she asked for help, in front of the knights who then joined in.
What Viego did next at Helia was the Ruination, and it turned the Blessed Isles into the Shadow Isles. Our codex defines the Black Mist it left behind as “undeath energy from the Ruination of the Blessed Isles, raising the dead as spectral thralls.” The Ruination chapters of Kalista’s Odyssey and its finale, Betrayal tell this stretch on screen.
Quest Step 5, Answer a Pledge
The betrayed who pay with their souls can call her, and she hunts the one who betrayed them.
The last step happens long after. Our codex lists Kalista among the wraiths, which it defines as “sapient undead spirits of the Shadow Isles, torn from their bodies by the Black Mist and defined by how firmly they hold on to who they once were.” Most of the Isles’ dead do not hold on. The Mistwraith card says those specters “shed their identities long ago to become amalgamations of pure, unappeasable hunger.” Kalista kept one thing from her life, the betrayal, and her biography says what she does with it:
The betrayed may cry out in blood to be avenged, but Kalista only answers those willing to pay with their very souls.

That pact is the quest’s ending, and Riot filmed it in Kalista: The Pledge. A man is betrayed by his partner, who tells him, “’Cause I could. ’Cause I wanted to.” Dying, he calls her:
With my dying breath, I offer my soul to thee, Lady of Vengeance.
Let justice be done!
Pledge accepted.
We are the Spear of Vengeance.
We come for you, deceiver.
Her League lines show who she watches for. She calls Twisted Fate, the card-sharp who left his partner Graves behind when a job went wrong, “a vile betrayer,” and she tells Graves he only has to speak her name:
League of Legends, Kalista: First Encounter with Twisted Fate
Kalista: “You are a vile betrayer, Cardmaster!”
Kalista: “Twisted Fate, your hour approaches.”
League of Legends, Kalista: First Encounter with Graves
Kalista: “Graves, you have only to speak our name.”
Kalista: “We taste your anger, Graves.”
Kalista: “Give in to your hate, Graves.”

Kalista’s Black Spear, the spell card that deals damage when an ally has died that round, adds one line in her voice: “Our spear sings for the fallen.” Her biography is clear that the pledge only ends one way: “any pact sealed with this grim hunter can only be ended by the cold, piercing fire of her soul-spears.”
Kalista’s Quest in the Riot MMO
Our read on how her five steps would hold up as a quest chain.
Nothing about Kalista in the Riot MMO has been announced. This is our read of how her canon would carry a quest chain.
- The order is fixed. Every step depends on the one before it. The pact in step 5 only makes sense after the player has stood at Helia in step 4 and watched who held the spear.
- The places already exist. Camavor, Helia and the Shadow Isles are all canon locations, and the Isles are the same ground before and after the Ruination, so one zone can carry both halves of her story.
- The pact is already a mechanic. In League, her Sentinel ability rewards her and her Oathsworn, the ally she binds herself to, for striking the same target, and Fate’s Call pulls that ally to her. A group game could make the binding a choice one player makes for another.
Our read. Kalista works as a questline because the player learns the reason for the ending at the step before it. Skip Helia and the pledge is just a ghost with a spear.
Justice or Revenge?
Judge the pledge: justice for the betrayed, or revenge by another name.
Kalista has her own answer. Asked about justice in Legends of Runeterra, she says it plainly:
Legends of Runeterra, Kalista and Gwen
Kalista: “There can be no justice, only revenge.”
Gwen: “There is joy too! If only you could see it!”
The pact still begins with a dying man asking for justice, and it ends with his betrayer dead.
Is the pact Kalista answers justice or revenge?
