Heads up: nothing here is announced, and the Riot MMO is still years out (dark since the 2024 reset, with no gameplay ever shown). This is grounded speculation: we read one Legends of Runeterra card for what its corner of the world could mean in the MMO.

A Demacian Historian Paid His Way Off the Shadow Isles a Week Early

Jens Tommen came to the Shadow Isles to study death, and the card carrying his notes shows a lantern on the ground.

Jens Tommen, a historian from Demacia, went to the Shadow Isles, the cursed islands of the restless dead, on purpose. His notes run across the flavour text of Shadow Isles cards in Legends of Runeterra, Riot's card game, and the one printed on Passage Unearned, a Shadow Isles spell, is the day he stops treating death as a subject:

"Of course, death is present in Demacia. We see it take our loved ones and know that, someday, it will come for us. But on these isles... I can almost taste death. I feel it in my lungs as I breathe, I hear it whisper in my ear. It is not some abstract notion. It sits with me here. Now. And it will have us all."

Notes of Jens Tommen, historian, on Passage Unearned

The art at the top of this page shows no monster. It shows a caged lantern rolled on its side, still burning, and a gloved hand lying open beside it. Whoever carried that light is down.

That picture is the problem this piece works through. Tommen came for the ruins: before the Ruination, the catastrophe that turned them into the Shadow Isles, these were the Blessed Isles, and Riot's region galleries still show their halls of learning.

Our own encyclopedia says the dead of these isles fear light. So why is the light on the ground, and why did a man who came to study them book his way out early?

The Encyclopedia Says Light Drives the Mist Back. The Looters Say Their Torch Does Nothing.

The Black Mist retreats from strong light, but the looters at the Whale's Tooth say what stalks them there does not.

The Black Mist, the fog of undeath that pours from the isles and binds the souls it kills, has a known weakness. Our entry on it is plain:

"Strong light, and above all the holy light wielded by the Sentinels of Light, drives it back; it weakens the farther it strays from the Shadow Isles; and a will strong enough can resist its pull."

Black Mist, RuneGrove encyclopedia

Riot's own short film for the region, Tales of Runeterra: Shadow Isles, runs on the same rule. Someone sets out with a promise: "I'll relight the wards and come right back." The next voice is calling for a father who does not answer, and the film closes on its thesis: "That is the truth of the Isles. Mortals come lured by hope. And we are always waiting."

Then the Whale's Tooth, a settlement on the isles that looters run back to, breaks the rule. One of those looters speaks on Shroud of Darkness, a Shadow Isles spell:

"Soon as you step outside the Tooth, you'll feel 'em. Fingertips on your nape, light as rain. Them creatures don't budge when you come at 'em, neither. Ain't afraid of my blade or my torch. Nothin'. Awful things."

Blade and torch, nothing. If light answers the Mist and this thing ignores light, it is not the Mist. Our read is that the looters bring it with them, and the rest of the cards say how.

Every Visitor Is Bait, and the Eyes Multiply Behind You

Riot's region art says any mortal on the isles draws the dead, and a looter watched the eyes behind him multiply.

Riot's region art for the isles states the first half flatly:

"Any mortal who sets foot upon the Shadow Isles will attract the spirits of the fallen."

What they are drawn to is feeling. The Shadow Isles wraiths, the mindless remnants of people the Mist killed, are described in our entry as "driven only by echoes of its living emotions: rage, grief, hunger, and despair." A visitor walks in carrying all four.

Another looter from the Tooth watched the count climb. His words sit on Evershade Stalker, a Shadow Isles unit:

"It was just a pair of eyes at first, and a lone voice chittering in the shadows. More every time I looked back. Angrier. Louder. Soon as I saw the Tooth, I ran."

The card plays the way he tells it. Its Nightfall ability, which fires when it is not the first card played that round, reads "Create a copy of me in hand." Its recorded lines are one creature talking about more of itself:

Evershade Stalker, Legends of Runeterra

Evershade Stalker: “More... more... more.”

Evershade Stalker: “Eyes everywhere.”

Evershade Stalker: “Found you.”

The Thing in Tommen's Dreams Came for the Fear, Not the Dead

Nocturne, a demon of fear, is drawn to weak spirits, and Tommen's notes track it closing in until he pays to leave.

The strongest of the isles' dead keep enough of themselves to choose who they hunt. Riot's region art says they became "predatory spirits who may stalk the weak and vulnerable for all eternity."

Tommen was getting weaker. On Unspeakable Horror, a Shadow Isles spell, he writes from inside the Tooth:

"Every passing day saps my spirit, pulls from me the vigor that compelled me to find this place. The Whale's Tooth is full of haggard folk, seemingly lost to all endeavor, and I fear the longer I stay, the more like them I become."

Notes of Jens Tommen, historian, on Unspeakable Horror

Weak spirits are exactly what Nocturne eats. Nocturne is a demon, one of the beings that take form through the darker feelings of mortal minds, and its biography says it starved until it found sleepers: "The only thing close to the delectable feasts of fear it had once tasted was when mortal minds unknowingly drifted through the ether in the hours of sleep." Now "the demon is drawn to any weakness of spirit it can twist into mortal terror, and everlasting darkness."

Tommen's notes on the Nocturne card name the trigger, and its levelled-up side records the night he left:

"It appears that, once enough souls have been shaken, it breaches our world. Only hope can send the monstrosity back to its realm... but hope died here long ago, on a queen's final breath, and with a king's eternal scream."

"My dreams grow more vivid with each passing night. I see a creature of pure evil, writhing in the dark, twisting its way toward me. Though I was to be stationed here for another week, I have just paid for transport to Fossbarrow this evening. Plainly, I cannot stand this place."

That answers the torch. Light drives back the Mist, and Nocturne is not the Mist. The more frightened the visitor, the nearer it comes. Its card lines in Legends of Runeterra say what it does to a lantern:

Nocturne, when summoned

Nocturne: “They all fear something.”

Nocturne: “Snuff out the light.”

Nocturne, when an allied Unspeakable Horror resolves

Nocturne: “Their light wanes.”

The more frightened the visitor, the nearer it comes.

Passage Unearned Destroys What Arrived Without Paying

The spell's rules erase every unit that entered play for free, and Tommen left the only way the isles allow: he paid.

Now read the spell's rules: "Obliterate all units that were summoned, but not played, this round." In Legends of Runeterra, a played unit is one you paid mana for and cast from your hand. A summoned one can also land on the board for free, conjured by another card. Obliterate removes it from the game entirely.

Our read is that the name and the art argue one thing. The spell wipes out whatever got onto the board without paying its way, like the eyes that multiplied behind the looter. Tommen is the one person in these notes who paid: he bought his transport and left a week early. The lantern on the card is what is left of someone who stayed.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

The isles hand an MMO a bestiary keyed to the players who walk in, not a spawn table on a timer.

  • Spawns follow people. The region art says any mortal on the isles draws the dead. A zone whose monster count scales with the players standing in it cannot be farmed from one safe spot.
  • Two counters. Light drives back the Black Mist and its wraiths. Nocturne's answer to light is "Snuff out the light." One zone, two creature families, and the torch works on one.
  • A fear threshold. Tommen's "once enough souls have been shaken, it breaches our world" is a world event already written: enough frightened players, and the demon arrives.
  • Staying costs. The Whale's Tooth is where looters shelter, and Tommen says every day there "saps my spirit." A base camp that drains you rewards the player who goes in, loots and leaves.
  • A clean-up rule. Passage Unearned kills what was summoned but not played, a ready answer to the extra creatures a boss conjures mid-fight.

Our read. The Shadow Isles should be the zone where the hunters make the ecology. The looters are already in canon, their camp has a name, and every monster Riot wrote for them arrives because somebody came. Spawn the nightmares from the players' own presence instead of a timer, and Tommen's choice becomes the design: the salvage is out there, and the boat out has a price.
