Heads up: the news here is real and sourced. The read on what it means for the unannounced Riot MMO is ours, and speculative where labelled. RuneGrove covers everything through one lens: what it tells us about the MMO.

Source: r/RiotMMO. Every quote below is verbatim from the thread and linked to the comment it came from. A claim about what Riot has said stays labeled as a user's characterization unless we could source it.

Pentakill Mordekaiser: the same champion as a guitarist rather than the ruler of a realm he built out of the dead.

The Thread

Topic #18 asked what makes a world feel alive. Inside a day its best thread was arguing about which version of a champion the shop is allowed to sell.

Riot sells two Mordekaisers. One is a warlord who died, found nothing waiting for him, and forged a kingdom out of the dead. The other plays lead guitar. A League match never has to decide which one is real, because the match ends. A shared, persistent Runeterra would have to decide every time a stranger walks past you in town.

That is the question r/RiotMMO backed into on August 5, 2026. Moderator /u/Talents opened Biweekly Riot MMO Design Discussion Topic #18: World Immersion, the eighteenth entry in the subreddit's running design series, two weeks after Topic #17 covered Group Finder and Matchmaking on July 22, 2026.

The prompt was conventional. It held up New World as the most recent AAA Western MMORPG to ship and the one whose world felt best to stand in, then offered starter questions about how townsfolk and monsters should behave and which region of Runeterra has the greatest potential to feel immersive.

The most recent AAA Western MMORPG to release, New World, had many faults, but something that is widely agreed upon is that it felt extremely good to be in the world.

/u/Talents also floated one feature to argue about: letting players play instruments. That is where the thread turned, because /u/niwi501 answered it with a joke.

World immersion is turning a corner and seeing a kda concert /s
/u/niwi501, r/RiotMMO

/u/Masalar refused to take it as one.

You joke but I think this is actually a really important point of discussion. Being able to actually see a KDA or Pentakill concert in game would be really cool. Same with being able to watch actual LoL games. Figuring out how to handle some potentially really cool but immersion breaking events will likely be a very big problem they have to tackle.

All of this is happening in a small room. The thread was at 13 comments as of the morning of August 6, 2026.

The cleanest way to see the problem is to put two of Riot's AhriAhri skins side by side.

K/DA Ahri, from the line the thread named as the hardest to place in a shared Runeterra.

Both Camps

Two camps formed, and they already agree on the thing readers assume is up for grabs: a button to hide other players' cosmetics.

/u/Masalar put the money on the table in a follow-up, and named the lines.

how do you think Riot will handle their AUs? High Noon, Star Guardian, Pentakill, and some of the other big skin lines are very popular cosmetically. If the MMO is to be any sort of free to play it will need to sell cosmetics and those are some very popular choices. However, there's no denying the immersion breaking nature of it all. It could feel pretty weird to be in a boss fight against Modekaiser alongside players in a Cafe Cutie, a High Noon, or a Project cosmetic set.
/u/Masalar, r/RiotMMO

/u/ohtetraket took the other side and picked the hardest single case in the catalog: MordekaiserMordekaiser.

Yeah, I don't really want them to do down the line of "alternate realities" which these Skinlines really are. Mordekaiser is part of Pentakill, but he is an extremely powerful and evil being, sitting in his own created realm of death. Don't see how he can be a "funny rock star guy with a guitar"
/u/ohtetraket, r/RiotMMO
Canon Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant. This is the version the guitar has to stand next to.

/u/Traditional_Mix_5693 went looking for an escape hatch instead. He had picked the habit up from another MMO he calls CoA, where switching cosmetics off also turned off store mounts.

Something I always noticed with MMO's is most of them do start off with immersion in mind but then abandon it when they start selling skins/cosmetics. I get that they need to make a profit somehow but If I could have one thing in any new MMO is to add a "turn off transmog" button just so I don't see it.
/u/Traditional_Mix_5693, r/RiotMMO

Both camps then answered him the same way. /u/ohtetraket said the button has come up for League and TFT and gone nowhere, calling it "a net negative button in Skin purchases". Treat that as a user's characterization of past dev comments rather than a Riot statement, because we could not source one.

/u/Masalar, arguing the opposite side of the AU question, got to the same answer from the revenue direction: seeing a cosmetic on somebody else is the advertisement for buying it. The toggle is the cheapest fix on the table and the only one with a revenue argument pointed at it.

The rest of the thread stayed on ordinary immersion ground, and it is worth reading for what it wants instead. /u/Due_Pressure8760 asked for a world that keeps running without him, and answered the prompt's region question with Ionia.

Monsters should behave according to their lore rather than simply standing in one location waiting to be killed. For example: Imagine a dragon that lives in a cave. It occasionally leaves to steal sheep from a nearby farm, then returns to its den to feed its young. A group of players could eventually track it down and kill it, leaving the den empty.
/u/Due_Pressure8760, r/RiotMMO

/u/Bartomarimo wanted NPCs with lives outside their quest role. /u/Sensitive-Presence asked for day and night cycles, weather, patrolling named mobs, boats and trains, and "no flying mounts (seriously)". /u/Jclaytontuck wanted the world to feel full and named Pokemon SV and Legends Arceus as the empty-world failure case. None of that fights a cash shop. The AU question does.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

Riot's shipped games are free to play and paid for with cosmetics. What the MMO sells, and what it charges for, has never been announced.

This is more than a taste argument. Every game Riot ships is free to play and funded by cosmetics, and four of its best known lines (K/DA, Pentakill, Star Guardian, High Noon) sit outside Runeterra canon rather than inside it. In a MOBA that costs nothing. The match is a closed box, the skins leave with it, and nobody has to reconcile a pop star with a death god.

A persistent shared world has no such door. Whatever the shop sells becomes scenery for everybody else, all session long. That turns the cosmetics catalog from a revenue decision into a world-consistency decision.

Whatever the shop sells becomes scenery for everybody else, all session long.

Riot has never put a business model on the record for this game, so every version of this argument is speculation, ours included. What does exist is a job posting: Riot is hiring an engineer to architect the in-game store for a game it still will not name. A store is in the plan. What goes in it, which regions or era the game covers, and how it charges are all unrevealed.

The read for the MMO, and it is ours, not Riot's:
  • If the MMO is free to play on the League model, the lines that pay for it are the lines that argue with it.
  • The hide-cosmetics toggle is the clearest early signal there is. If it ships, immersion won an argument with the shop.
  • Staging the alternate universes as in-world events turns the problem into content, and the moderator's own prompt already suggested letting players play instruments.
  • Other MMOs split the difference by limiting where an override applies. Every version of that trade costs the shop reach, which is exactly why it would read as a signal instead of a free win.

This is the same crowd we covered reading the hiring blitz for timeline signals, and the pattern holds. They are arguing about the shop long before Riot has said a word about one.

What to Watch

Two dated beats worth tracking, and neither of them is a Riot announcement.

Topic #19 is due if the cadence holds

Topics #17 and #18 ran fourteen days apart, on July 22 and August 5. The series belongs to the subreddit, not to Riot, and Riot has announced nothing.

Should Riot's MMO let players wear alternate-universe skins like K/DA and Pentakill out in the open world?
