Heads up: the news here is real and sourced. The read on what it means for the unannounced Riot MMO is ours, and speculative where labelled. RuneGrove covers everything through one lens: what it tells us about the MMO.

What Happened

A fan offered <Is Cancelled> as a guild name for the Riot MMO, and the engineer he was joking with refused to let it stand.

  • The refusal. At 21:04 UTC on September 20, Orlando Salvatore, a senior engineering manager on the Riot MMO, answered the proposed guild name <Is Cancelled> with "That would be spreading fake news."
  • The cancellation fear. Riot announced on August 20 that active development of its fighting game 2XKO ends in December 2026. That is the decision the joke leans on.
  • His old desk. Salvatore joined Riot in October 2024 from Blizzard, the studio behind World of Warcraft, where he was a lead software engineer on WoW Classic.
  • The setup. On September 19 the fan account oheyspun asked who would join a guild built "with the obvious intention of us eventually landing in The Riot MMO."
  • Playing dumb. Salvatore replied, "What does The Riot MMO mean? Is that a reference to something?"
  • A guild of his own. That evening oheyspun posted from the beta of WoW Forever, Blizzard’s new version of World of Warcraft, under the tag <Pixel Perfect>.
  • The offer. At 20:59 UTC Salvatore wrote, "I’m sad you didn’t call your guild The Riot MMO," under a screenshot of a character named Riot Mmorpg.
  • The counter. Four minutes later oheyspun offered "<Is Cancelled> would go hard", a tag that would have sat under that character’s name.

Everything pictured here is Blizzard’s game. The guild, the characters and the empty street all came out of the WoW Forever beta, and the Riot engineer is the one answering.

oheyspun's Tauren, Spun Cope, under the guild tag <Pixel Perfect> in the World of Warcraft: Forever beta, posted September 19, 2026 with 'We out here. All are welcome. (Horde PVP)'. The angle brackets are how WoW shows a guild's name under a character, the format of the <Is Cancelled> joke. (oheyspun (@oheyspun); World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard Entertainment)

The Same Evening

Seven minutes earlier Salvatore had blamed the same beta for an empty five-mile walk, and the developer who built it agreed.

  • The walk. At 20:52 UTC Salvatore posted four photos of empty sidewalks and a bare crossroads, taken on a nearly five-mile walk on which he saw almost no one.
  • His caption. He put it down to the beta: "An MMOs blast radius is big," with a wink. The post had 6,375 views by September 21.
  • Blizzard agreed. Josh Greenfield, a WoW Classic developer at Blizzard, replied at 21:36 UTC: "At this point I think that assessment might be correct."
  • Why he agreed. Two days earlier Greenfield had called the beta’s numbers the craziest he had seen in 17 years at Blizzard.
  • To Greenfield. At 21:59 UTC he told Greenfield the team had crushed it, and called the beta "all about the player."
  • To the fan. At 22:22 UTC @Frumpyrat replied, "I heard people talking about it at the store today. Soon(???) these conversations will be about your mmo instead."
  • His answer. Salvatore came back at 01:16 UTC: "One day I hope!"

Seven minutes separated the walk post from Salvatore’s first reply about the guild. Both threads ran off the same beta, and he answered in both.

You and the team absolutely crushed it my dude, it's all about the player and boy did this deliver.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

Our read, labelled speculative: a cancellation joke refused in public, a competitor’s beta held up as the bar, and a launch spoken of as hope with no date.

  • Not a signal. None of Salvatore’s replies says anything about the game’s design, its name or its schedule.
  • No date exists. Riot has announced no launch window for the MMO, and "One day I hope!" carries none.
  • Scope is unrevealed. The only confirmed fact about the game is its setting, Runeterra; its size, era, platform and business model are unannounced.
  • The bar is Blizzard’s. The design Salvatore praised launches on November 4, and it is the one we sorted into six things Riot should take and three it should leave.
  • The other post. Sarah Tudor, a game producer on the Riot MMO, posted "Time to lock in." and attached nothing to it.

Our read. A joke is not a roadmap. What it shows is a team relaxed enough to make cancellation the punchline in the month Riot wound down another of its games, and an engineer who measures his own unreleased project against what his old employer just shipped.

Your Take

Reader poll

Does a Riot MMO dev joking that cancellation is 'fake news' tell you anything about the game's health?

What to Watch

Two dated beats, then three more RuneGrove reads on the beta Salvatore praised and the team he works on.

Reported from Orlando Salvatore (@KirbyAu), Josh Greenfield (@AggrendWoW), @oheyspun and @Frumpyrat on X, every post read through fxtwitter. Counts were read at about 18:50 UTC on September 21. The replies are jokes and confirm nothing about the game; the MMO read is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
