Naafiri Is a Raid Boss, Not a Class
Naafiri, the Hound of a Hundred Bites, is the strangest killer in League of Legends. Not one assassin but a whole pack of Shuriman dune hounds sharing a single Darkin mind, hunting as one creature. She has prowled the Rift since 2023, and the most interesting thing about her has been hiding in plain sight the whole time. Her kit does not describe a class. It describes a raid.
Her own biography puts the pack better than any tooltip can:
"There were no individuals—the pack was the entity that dominated all."
You do not pilot a swarm intelligence the way you pilot a hero. You fight it. And the reason she belongs at the front of a raid wing is not her teeth. It is her plan. Read what she actually wants:
"She knew how to restore them. Now she just needed to find her siblings and share with them the wisdom of the pack."
Her reveal cinematic already plays like the encounter's cold open. Watch the pack move as one thing.
The Encounter at a Glance
Naafiri, the Hound of a Hundred Bites
Opening raid of the Darkin expansion
The boss is not the hound in front of you. The boss is the pack, and the pack thinks as one.
Where It Takes Place
The raid opens where her story did. Naafiri's dagger lay bound in an Ascended crypt beneath the Shuriman sand until a pack of dune hounds tore open the raider who carried it and her shattered soul flooded them all. She has come back, and this time she is not the only one who wants what the crypt holds.
The darkin who fell were never all woken. The oldest darkin story in the game is clear that the sealed ones are still down there, locked away and waiting:
"These darkin weapons were hidden, many of them carefully guarded by the mortal civilizations that grew in the aftermath—for it was clear that such power could be locked away, but never destroyed."
Here is the hook the whole raid turns on. A collapse in the deep desert has uncovered another darkin weapon inside this crypt, one no surviving record names. Canon leaves room for it: most of the buried darkin were scattered and forgotten, and Shurima's crypts are exactly where Naafiri's own was found. She wants this one as the first true member of her pack. You want to reach it first. This is a race.
From there it goes mobile. The fight breaks out of the crypt and into the Sai canyons and the open dune sea as both packs converge on the weapon. A lone hound starves; the pack owns open ground, and Naafiri means to cross it to the Edge before you do. You do not run it alone either.
Sivir, the Shuriman mercenary who has crossed this desert's buried powers before and lived, is the one who leads the raid into the dark.
The Three Phases
The fight opens in the dark, and Naafiri is not in it yet. Her pack is. Hounds hunt you between the crypt pillars, marking raiders with bleeds and converging on the wounded. This phase teaches the rule the whole encounter runs on: the pack punishes anyone who clusters.
What you fight: the crypt's own residents. Baccai tomb-wardens roused by the intrusion (see the Bestiary), and Xer'sai burrowers that erupt from the floor when the digging wakes the deep Sai.
Naafiri manifests, and the fight stops being about her health bar. The Call of the Pack pulses on a timer: she turns untargetable, a wave of fresh hounds floods the room, and she hits harder and moves faster for a few seconds. The raid lives or dies on how it reads that window.
Watch for: the moment the pack doubles. That is the swell. Healers brace, the group spreads, and the melee decides which hounds die first.
The crypt breaks open and the fight spills into the Sai canyons and the open dune sea. Now it is a hunt and a race at once. Hounds' Pursuit marks a single raider and the whole pack leaps after them, so the group kites across the sand and drops line of sight behind the rocks, while the Sunless Edge sits out in the open as the finish line both packs are sprinting for.
The win: beat her to the Edge and put it beyond her reach. Stop the unifier on the very day she would have gained her first packmate, and the pack of darkin she dreamed of never takes its first breath.
How the Pack Fights
None of these mechanics are invented. Every one maps to an ability Naafiri already has on the Rift. Here is the live kit, read as a raid toolkit.
P We Are More
This is the whole encounter in one passive. Naafiri never fights as one body. Her hounds pile onto whatever she points at, and her threat scales with how many are still breathing. Thin the pack and the boss gets weaker. Leave it alone and she regrows it. The raid's real job is the pack, not the bar.
Q Darkin Daggers
Her ranged mark and her bleed. The daggers leave damage over time, and striking a target that already bleeds spikes the payoff. In a raid that becomes a spread check: bunch up and one volley shreds the group, so the pull fans out and keeps the bleeds apart.
W The Call of the Pack
Her rhythm button. A short window where she goes untargetable, a swell of fresh hounds arrives, and she gains speed and damage on top. It reads two ways at once. It is her dodge for a telegraphed hit, and it is her burst window. The raid waits it out, then punishes the gap when she drops back.
E Eviscerate
A dash that heals the pack, not Naafiri. Watch where the heal lands: on the hounds. That turns healing into an add-control problem. You do not out-damage her sustain, you cull the topped-up hounds before they feed her another swell.
R Hounds' Pursuit
The finisher and the scariest moment in the fight. She and the pack leap onto a single marked raider, with vision, a recast, and a shield if they land the kill. It is an execute, a chase, and a panic button in one cast. When the mark lands on you, the whole pack is coming, and the raid has seconds to peel.
The Bestiary, and Why Each Belongs
Every creature here is real, pulled from Legends of Runeterra's Shurima and Void cards, and every one has a verifiable reason to be in this tomb. The logic comes straight from the card for Xolaani, the healer-darkin, which is also the clearest explanation in the game of what Naafiri actually is:
"Shurima's Ascended were doomed the moment they took up arms against the Void... Xolaani, once a beloved and gifted healer, began using her hemomantic powers to control her brethren, and soon enough, the hatred between her and Aatrox boiled over into civil war."
The Void broke the Ascended at Icathia. The strongest of the broken became the darkin, like Naafiri and Aatrox. The Baccai are a different wound, failed-Ascension rejects who, in canon, still skulk in the buried tombs. So a Shuriman crypt around a waking darkin holds exactly three hostile things: the Baccai that crawl the tombs, the Void brood that broke the Ascended host, and Naafiri's own pack. No Sun Disc soldiers, no Ascended loyalists. Those serve Shurima, and Shurima would fight Naafiri beside you.

Baccai Reaper
Tomb warden"The baccai all fled or were spared following their failed Ascension, and none have seen them since. Who knows how long they have hidden in those dark tombs, bearing the mark of their shame?"
Why it is in the raid: This is its tomb. The baccai are failed-Ascended who, in canon, were left to guard Shurima's buried crypts, and the instant your raid breaks in you are grave-robbers in their dark. The Reaper meets you at the threshold and asks nothing. It defends the crypt because defending the crypt is the only purpose its shame left it. Your frontline trash, with a watertight reason to be in this exact room.

Forsaken Baccai
Darkin cultist"even as he revered the Darkin's power, he harbored a secret resentment in his beastly heart."
Why it is in the raid: It worships what is waking. This baccai revered the darkin in life (its card names Rhaast as the friend it envied), and a darkin stirring in the next chamber is the answer to its whole bitter existence. These are the zealots who throw themselves between your raid and Naafiri to buy her awakening a few more seconds.

Xer'sai Hatchling
Void brood"the young xer’sai refine their instincts, learning which sounds are of the desert, and which signal their prey."
Why it is in the raid: You are digging in its pantry. The xer'sai hunt the deep Sai, Rek'Sai's own brood, and a tomb torn open from the inside rings the dinner bell: noise, movement, warm bodies underground. It answers to no darkin and no emperor. It comes for your raid for the simplest reason there is, which is that your raid is meat.

Xerxa'Reth, the Undertitan
Mini-boss"a mighty beast broke through the ground, and annihilated both the outpost and all who called it home."
Why it is in the raid: It is why the tomb opens at all. A titan-class burrower that once ate a whole river outpost from below, its surfacing here is what shatters the crypt floor and turns a buried fight into an open hunt. You do not go looking for it. It comes up through the ground beneath your feet, the hinge between the crypt and the dunes.

Baccai Sandspinner
Elite caster"Each grain she spills takes a second from their lives, wearing away at them like wind."
Why it is in the raid: Another tomb-warden, and the cruelest. Like every baccai she holds these crypts as hers, and you are intruders defiling a vault she has guarded for an age. Her curse even fits the room: she spends your years like sand while you stand where a thousand years already blew away. She is the last warden between your raid and the sealed darkin.

Dune Swallower
Desert apex"it can swallow entire dunes (and any witnesses) whole."
Why it is in the raid: Once the fight spills out of the crypt, you have wandered onto its dune. The largest xer'sai of all surfaces for the largest meal, and right now that is your raid, strung across open sand with nowhere to hide. It does not care about Naafiri or her pack. It cares that you are loud, slow, and many.
The Darkin She Hunts
Naafiri's dream has names, and not one of them is buried treasure. Her siblings are awake and loose in the world already, each a catastrophe in motion. The raid stops her before she can reach any of them, and that restraint is the point, because every one of them is a fight too big for this crypt.

Aatrox, the Darkin Blade
Awake"Now, Aatrox marches toward this merciless goal, bringing war and death wherever he goes."
Status: The strongest free darkin, and the one who long ago broke his weapon-prison to wear a mortal host. He calls himself the World Ender and means it. He wants to end creation, not join a pack, which is exactly the ego Naafiri thinks she can break. He is not under any sand. He is out there, marching.

Varus
Awake"It is certain he will seek to reunite with others of his kind."
Status: Three beings in one body: the hunters Valmar and Kai, and the darkin that consumed them, reborn after more than a thousand years. His own bio says he is already drawn toward the same reunion Naafiri preaches, which makes him the sibling she barely has to convince.

Rhaast
Awake, bound"Rhaast has long awaited the perfect host in order to rejoin its Darkin brethren and lay waste to the world, but Kayn will not be easily dominated."
Status: The darkin riding the scythe of an Ionian assassin named Kayn, an ocean away from Shurima and locked in a fight for that body. He once raided the Wuju Temple chasing a second darkin weapon, Xolaani's Bloodletters. He shares Naafiri's goal and has none of her patience.
And there is the warning she ignores. Xolaani, the healer-darkin, already tried to bind her siblings to her will. It ended in a darkin civil war against Aatrox. Unity is the most dangerous idea in darkin history, and Naafiri wants to try it again. So the raid keeps its discipline: no second major darkin sets foot in this fight. Aatrox is roaming, Rhaast is in Ionia, Varus is elsewhere. The only darkin in the crypt is the one you came for, and the sleeping one you are both racing to reach.
Where It Sits in History
A Naafiri raid is not a standalone curiosity. It sits at the end of the oldest thread in Runeterra, the long fall of Shurima's god-warriors. Here is where it lands on the timeline.
Golden Age
The Ascended rise
Shurima's Sun Disc forges god-warriors from mortal heroes.
Roughly 2500 BN
Icathia and the Void
A rebel city unleashes the Void. The war that follows breaks the Ascended.
Roughly 2000 BN
The Great Darkin War
The fallen Ascended, now darkin, are sealed inside their own weapons.
Recent
Naafiri wakes
Dune hounds find her buried dagger and her mind splits across the pack.
Unannounced
The Riot MMO
Where a raid like this could one day live. Nothing is confirmed.
Would You Run It?
A Naafiri raid as the opening boss of a Darkin expansion. Day one, are you in?
One more time, plainly: Riot has announced no class, no zone, and no raid for its MMO, and the project is years out. This is a fan design built on sourced canon, with the single speculative leap (a race for a newly uncovered, unnamed darkin we named the Sunless Edge) flagged where it happens. Lore quoted from Naafiri's, Aatrox's, Varus's, and Kayn's official biographies, The Legend of the Darkin, and the Legends of Runeterra cards linked throughout. Design by RuneGrove.
