One Card Hides a Whole Raid
Most Legends of Runeterra cards are a stat line and a nice piece of art. A few are doors. Chamber of Renewal, a Shurima Landmark illustrated by Kudos Productions, is a door, and what waits on the other side of it is one of the darkest secrets in Runeterra. Read the flavor text before you read another word of ours.
"Nasus emerged from the sarcophagus, his mind clear and his wounds fully healed. He scribbled a few notes and peered at the sarcophagi hanging high above, pondering the mental state of the beastly aberrations resting within. Time would tell if this magic could bring the baccai back from their insanity, a magic the other Ascended had once protested. But they were gone now and Renekton and his madness were not. Nasus scribbled a few more words, hoping he had finally found a way to save his brother."
Sit with that.
Nasus, the Curator of the Sands, has built a chamber where the dead do not stay hurt and the mad might be made whole again. Sarcophagi hang from the ceiling, and inside each one sleeps a baccai, one of Shurima's failed god-warriors, an aberration the empire spent a thousand years pretending it never made. Nasus is not studying them out of pity. He is rehearsing. Every baccai he can pull back from insanity is a step toward the one cure he actually wants, the one that saves his brother
Renekton.
Everything that makes it work is already canon. We did not have to invent the baccai, the chamber, the cure, or the grief. Riot did. All we are adding is the moment it goes wrong.
The Encounter at a Glance
The Unrenewed
A baccai raid inside the Chamber of Renewal
The boss is not the strongest baccai. It is the one Nasus almost saved, and could not.
What the Baccai Actually Are
To understand the raid you have to understand what a baccai is, because the game has been telling this story in pieces for years and almost nobody has put it together. Start at the source: our Baccai entry lays out the whole tragedy, and it begins with Shurima's proudest ritual.
The Ascended were mortals raised into towering god-warriors by the Sun Disc. The ritual was supposed to be a reward for the empire's greatest heroes. It was not a guarantee. Step before the Sun Disc unworthy and the light did not glorify you, it warped you. Those broken transformations are the baccai: misshapen, monstrous, keeping some fraction of the power and none of the glory. Shurima's priesthood was so ashamed of them that they hid the survivors away and struck the failures from the records.
"The baccai all fled or were spared following their failed Ascension, and none have seen them since. Who knows how long they have hidden in those dark tombs, bearing the mark of their shame?"
Then there is what
Xerath did. The Magus was never content to let the ritual fail on its own.
"Xerath added horrors of his own, forcing Shuriman fauna to fuse through the Ascension ritual."
That is not a metaphor.
K'Sante, the Pride of Nazumah, hunted and killed one of Xerath's fabricated baccai, a monstrous cobra-lion loosed on his people. So we know two hard facts a raid can build on: the baccai are still out there in Shurima's tombs, and someone with the right magic can make new ones on purpose.
"Some tales suggest that Renekton, before his imprisonment with Xerath, may have shown signs of Baccai instability — a partial corruption that was accelerated by millennia of isolation with a being of pure arcane energy."
If any part of that is true, then curing the baccai is not a side project for Nasus. It is the whole reason he built the chamber. The failed god-warriors hanging in his sarcophagi are practice for the patient he cannot bring himself to lose.
Inside the Chamber of Renewal
Now go back to the card and read it as a location, because that is exactly what a Landmark is: a place, not a person. The Chamber of Renewal is a room Nasus built and hid, and the art shows you the layout of a raid without meaning to.
A central sarcophagus, the one Nasus climbs out of healed. Above it, more sarcophagi hanging high, each holding a baccai in a magically enforced sleep. Renewal magic thick enough to knit an Ascended's wounds and clear his mind in a single cycle. And the detail that makes it forbidden: a magic the other Ascended had once protested. His own kind told him to stop. He kept a secret laboratory instead.

The game rules say the quiet part out loud. In Legends of Runeterra the Chamber of Renewal reads: when you summon a champion, destroy me to grant it +2|+1 and SpellShield. Strip the numbers and it is a machine that sacrifices itself to make something stronger and harder to kill. That is renewal as a mechanic. In a raid, it is also the exact reason the fight is dangerous, because the same magic that heals Nasus's patients does not care whether a patient has stopped being a patient.
The tragedy is that Nasus is the most sympathetic figure in the room and still the one who caused the disaster. He knows
Renekton is out there in the sands, mind poisoned against him, hunting him. He cannot reach his brother, so he practices on the only broken god-warriors he can catch. He is a good man doing a reckless thing for the best possible reason, and a raid is what happens the day the reckless thing wins.
The Three Phases
You do not walk into the Chamber of Renewal. You break in, and the moment you do, you are grave-robbers in a baccai's tomb. The baccai are not only Nasus's patients, they are his guards, and canon is explicit that guarding a Curator's vault is what a baccai is for.
"The baccai are tasked with defending the inner sanctum to safeguard the ancient treasures there, and for the sake of mortals that might think themselves clever enough, or mighty enough, to withstand the weight of the Curator's judgment."
What you fight: the tomb-wardens, the baccai who never lost their purpose even after they lost their minds. They defend the chamber because defending the chamber is the only dignity their shame left them.
Deeper in, the wardens give way to the ones the renewal magic could not calm. These are the baccai defined by rage, and the cards are blunt about where that rage comes from.
"The baccai are twisted, warped versions of what they might have been - had they become part of the Ascended Host - and the rage they feel at their failure must be unleashed somewhere."
The Rampaging Baccai carries a grudge that time cannot cool, and the Baccai Witherclaw is what happens when that grudge is all a creature has left.
"Their sanity withered away like dunes in the wind--and in its place, a seed of anger flourished into a fury no desert waters could quench."
And there is the zealot in the corner. The Forsaken Baccai is the one who never stopped worshipping what it could have been.
"In his hand he clutched a braided belt, a gift from his friend Rhaast before their Ascension ceremony - but even as he revered the Darkin’s power, he harbored a secret resentment in his beastly heart."
Rhaast is a darkin. The Forsaken Baccai envies the darkin's power because a darkin is the god-warrior a baccai failed to become. In this raid it throws itself at you to buy the sleeping aberration a few more seconds, because a broken god-warrior waking is the closest thing to salvation it will ever see.
The finale is the sarcophagus at the center of the chamber, the one Nasus never managed to empty. Inside is his greatest failure and his greatest guilt: a baccai he pulled halfway back from insanity and could bring no further, sealed away rather than put down. We are calling it the Unrenewed. It is the one boss in this raid that is ours, not Riot's, and we are flagging it plainly.
Key mechanic, the renewal loop: this is the card's game text turned into a boss. The Chamber of Renewal keeps healing the Unrenewed the way the Landmark grants +2|+1 and SpellShield, so you cannot simply out-damage it. Nasus built the room to be unkillable on purpose. The raid has to break the thing it was designed to protect: sever the hanging sarcophagi feeding the boss, collapse the renewal field, and only then is the Unrenewed mortal enough to fall.
The win, and the wound: you kill the Unrenewed by destroying the chamber, which means you also destroy the cure Nasus spent a thousand years building. He is not the boss. He is the man who arrives too late to stop you, watching the one hope he had for
Renekton burn down to save a raid group he never asked to be here. There is no clean victory in this room. That is the point.
The Bestiary, and Why Each Belongs
Every creature in this raid is a real Legends of Runeterra card, and every one has a canon reason to be in this exact tomb. Here is the full baccai roster the game has already given us, each with its own flavor text and its own place in the fight.

Chamber of Renewal
The raid itself"Nasus emerged from the sarcophagus, his mind clear and his wounds fully healed.
Why it is in the raid: The card the whole pitch is read out of. It is a Landmark, meaning a place, and the place is Nasus's hidden laboratory. The renewal magic that heals him is the same magic that will not let the final boss die, which is why the raid's win condition is destroying the room, not just the monster in it.

Baccai Reaper
Tomb warden"The baccai all fled or were spared following their failed Ascension, and none have seen them since. Who knows how long they have hidden in those dark tombs, bearing the mark of their shame?"
Why it is in the raid: The threshold guard. Its own flavor text is the clearest statement in the game of what the baccai became: fugitives hidden in dark tombs, bearing the mark of their shame. It grows stronger with every kill, so it is the pull that punishes a raid for opening sloppy.

Baccai Sandspinner
Elite warden"Each grain she spills takes a second from their lives, wearing away at them like wind."
Why it is in the raid: The cruelest warden, and the one whose curse fits the room. She spends a victim's years like grains of sand, which in a raid is a soft enrage: stand in the wrong sand and you age out of the fight. A thousand years of dust already blew through this chamber. She is happy to add yours.

Sanctum Conservator
Wing boss"The baccai are tasked with defending the inner sanctum to safeguard the ancient treasures there, and for the sake of mortals that might think themselves clever enough, or mighty enough, to withstand the weight of the Curator's judgment."
Why it is in the raid: The card that proves the whole premise. It names the Curator by his title and casts the baccai as the wardens of his inner sanctum, there to judge anyone who thinks themselves mighty enough to breach it. That is your raid, and this is the boss that closes the warden wing.

Rampaging Baccai
Berserker"The bearer of a grudge's resentment only deepens, even if those they bear the grudge against are long dead."
Why it is in the raid: The grudge given a body. Its resentment deepens even against the long dead, so it does not care that the empire that failed it is gone. It reads as the wing's damage check: leave it alive too long and the fury it cannot aim at Shurima lands on you instead.

Baccai Witherclaw
Maddened elite"Their sanity withered away like dunes in the wind--and in its place, a seed of anger flourished into a fury no desert waters could quench."
Why it is in the raid: The baccai the renewal magic could not reach. Its sanity withered into a fury no water could quench, which is exactly the failure state the Chamber of Renewal was built to reverse. It is the warning shot before the finale: this is what happens when the cure does not take.

Forsaken Baccai
Darkin zealot"In his hand he clutched a braided belt, a gift from his friend Rhaast before their Ascension ceremony - but even as he revered the Darkin’s power, he harbored a secret resentment in his beastly heart."
Why it is in the raid: The believer. It clutched a gift from its darkin friend Rhaast and envied the power it never earned. Its own Ascension failed where Rhaast's succeeded, so this creature worships the god-warrior it never became. It dies throwing itself between your raid and the waking aberration.
Where It Sits on the Map
A raid needs a place on the map, and Shurima is not a blank spot Riot would have to invent. It is one of the most thoroughly documented regions in Runeterra, and the baccai's story is already pinned to real locations you can read about in our Atlas. Here is where this raid actually sits.

The Tomb of the Emperors is the anchor. It is where
Nasus sealed
Xerath and
Renekton into the dark, and where centuries of Xerath's whispers cracked Renekton's mind. The chamber's whole purpose grows out of this room: it is the wound Nasus is trying to heal from a distance, on stand-ins, because he cannot open this tomb without freeing the thing that broke his brother.
Nerimazeth is where it all started and all went wrong. Our Atlas entry calls it the place where the first Ascended were created and where those who outlived the empire, driven mad, became the darkin. Shurima was born and died here, and Nasus himself is recorded dwelling in its ruins, haunted by the memory of Renekton. It is the natural hub for a Shuriman raid tier.
Icathia is the origin of the wound. This is where the Void broke the Ascended host and drove its maddened survivors into the darkin. Any expansion that raids the baccai still has to reckon with the older wound at Nerimazeth, the failed Ascensions that made them, even if this rift is not where their story began.
Nazumah is the proof the threat is live. It is
K'Sante's oasis city, and the place where he cornered and killed Xerath's cobra-lion baccai against a waterfall. The baccai are not a dead footnote. One of them terrorized a city within living memory, and the man who put it down is a playable champion.

One more time, plainly: Riot has announced no raid, no zone, and no encounter for its MMO, and the project is years out. This is a fan design built on sourced canon, with the single invented element (the boss we named the Unrenewed, and the breakout that wakes it) flagged where it happens.
