The Studio
Riot's careers site carries 19 openings under a department called Riot Discovery Studio, and three of them say 'unpublished MMO' in their own copy.
Riot still hasn't given its MMO a title. It has given the team a name, and the name has been sitting on Riot's own careers site the whole time.
The department is called Riot Discovery Studio. As of September 1, 2026 it carries 19 open roles across 5 cities: Los Angeles, Mercer Island, Sydney, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Every one of them is titled for an 'Unpublished R&D Product', the label 45 listings across the whole company share.
Riot's own product tag puts 3 of those 19 on the MMO, and those 3 leave nothing to infer. Their body copy says it out loud. A Sydney automation and build-systems listing calls the project 'A highly anticipated Riot MMO'. Its manager-level sibling puts the role 'on our unpublished MMO'. A Los Angeles graphics listing places the hire 'on the unpublished MMO team' and asks them to help 'build the engine technology that powers one of our new AAA games'.
None of this is a leak. It is the channel Riot chose. Executive producer Fabrice Condominas pointed applicants straight at the careers page's MMO product filter on February 2, 2026, in a post that says what the job is before it says anything else.
This weekend was another reminder of how hard building MMOs truly is. They demand grit, resilience, long-term vision, deep player insight, and mastery of complex systems at scale.

Riot developers have been doing the same thing one role at a time, and they use the word Riot's job titles will not. On February 21, 2026 a Riot recruiter opened with 'JOB ALERT! We're hiring a Principal Rendering Engineer for the League MMO.' On April 11, 2026 another posted 'We're looking for a Sr. Technical Animator to join the MMO-team', asking the hire to 'come help us make the characters of Runeterra come to life'. Back on July 11, 2025 the same account advertised 'a VFX architect for the Riot MMO', wanting something 'modular, scalable, Niagara-powered'.
Riot's own MMO recruiting landing page has not caught up with any of it. It still tells visitors 'right now we don't have any specific openings on the team.'
The New Roles
Three Los Angeles listings inside a week: one owns how combat feels on a prototype team, one scales art, audio and narrative production through outside vendors.
Three roles went live in Los Angeles inside a week, and read together they put the project in two places at once.
The Principal Game Designer, Combat & Controls was first published on August 25, 2026. A Principal Software Engineer, Gameplay and a Sr. Manager, Game Production both went up on August 27, 2026.
The combat listing hands one person 'combat, controls, targeting, camera, and gameplay feel' on 'a small cross-disciplinary prototype team', in what it calls 'early-stage development'. That is the brief you write when the answer is not decided yet.

The production listing reads like a different project. It names a Creative Director, an Art Director and craft leads for Characters, Environment, VFX and Animation as already in place, then asks its hire to run art, audio and narrative production 'at scale' while folding 'external vendor work' into internal pipelines. Studios bring in outside vendors when the work has outgrown the room.
| The two newest briefs | Principal Game Designer, Combat & Controls | Sr. Manager, Game Production |
|---|---|---|
| First published | August 25, 2026 | August 27, 2026 |
| Stage it names | 'Early-stage development' on 'a small cross-disciplinary prototype team' | Art, audio and narrative production 'at scale' |
| What the hire owns | 'Combat, controls, targeting, camera, and gameplay feel' | Production across art, audio and narrative, with 'external vendor work' folded into internal pipelines |
| Leadership it says is seated | Not revealed | A Creative Director, an Art Director, and craft leads for Characters, Environment, VFX and Animation |
| Riot's product tag | Riot Discovery | Riot Discovery |
| Scope, era, platform or business model | Not revealed | Not revealed |
One label matters before anyone runs with this. The three new listings carry the product tag 'Riot Discovery', not 'MMO'. Reading them as MMO roles is an inference from the shared studio and the shared job-title family. It is not a Riot statement, and we are not going to dress it up as one.

Production at scale goes up
The Sr. Manager, Game Production listing names seated craft leads and asks for external vendor work in the pipeline.
- Riot's careers site lists a department called Riot Discovery Studio with 19 open roles as of September 1, 2026
- All 19 are titled for an 'Unpublished R&D Product'; 45 listings across Riot use that title
- Three Riot Discovery Studio roles are tagged with the public product 'MMO'
- A Sydney build-systems listing calls the project 'A highly anticipated Riot MMO'
- A Sydney engineering-manager listing says the role is 'on our unpublished MMO'
- A Los Angeles rendering listing places the hire 'on the unpublished MMO team' building 'one of our new AAA games'
- Principal Game Designer, Combat & Controls (Los Angeles) was first published August 25, 2026
- Principal Software Engineer, Gameplay and Sr. Manager, Game Production (Los Angeles) were first published August 27, 2026
- The combat listing covers 'combat, controls, targeting, camera, and gameplay feel' on 'a small cross-disciplinary prototype team'
- The production listing names an existing Creative Director, Art Director and craft leads for Characters, Environment, VFX and Animation
- The production listing asks for art, audio and narrative production 'at scale' with 'external vendor work' integrated into internal pipelines
- Riot Discovery Studio roles are posted in Los Angeles, Mercer Island, Sydney, Shanghai and Guangzhou
- A Sydney listing asks an engineer to 'architect the foundational social and store systems' for the product
- Riot's MMO recruiting page still reads 'right now we don't have any specific openings on the team'
- Executive producer Fabrice Condominas linked the careers page's MMO product filter on February 2, 2026
- LABEL: the three new listings are tagged 'Riot Discovery', not 'MMO'; treating them as MMO roles is an inference from the shared studio, not a Riot statement
What This Means for the Riot MMO
Speculative read: the look of the world is settled enough to staff a content pipeline around it, and how the game plays is not.
Riot is still hiring someone to decide how the Runeterra MMO feels to fight in, and it has already hired the people who decide what it looks like. Both of those are in the same week of listings, under the same studio label, in the same city.
That gap is the story. A Creative Director and an Art Director are seated. Craft leads for Characters, Environment, VFX and Animation are seated. The role Riot went looking for last week is a producer to push all of that output through vendors and back into internal pipelines, which is what a project needs when it has stopped proving things and started manufacturing them.
Riot is still hiring someone to decide how the Runeterra MMO feels to fight in, and it has already hired the people who decide what it looks like.
Meanwhile combat, controls, targeting and camera sit on a prototype team. The first question anyone asks about a Runeterra MMO is whether it plays like an action game or a tab-target game, and Riot is advertising for the person who gets to answer it. That answer is not settled, and nobody outside that team knows which way it goes.
The engineering under all of this has been public for a while. Five listings already named the engine, massively multiplayer scale and a live server fleet. A rendering ad made MMO experience a hard requirement and named Nanite by hand, and a Riot recruiter went on to advertise a Principal Rendering Engineer 'for the League MMO' in public. Sydney is not a satellite either: Riot has been stacking its MMO server-tech studio there.
A Sydney 'Tech Foundations' listing asks an engineer to architect the 'foundational social and store systems' for the product. We covered the store half of that when Riot first advertised it for a game it would not name. Designing the shop next to the social layer, rather than bolting it on afterwards, is a decision you can only make this early. Riot has said nothing about what that shop sells or what the game costs, and we are not going to guess.
- The MMO has a studio identity on Riot's own site, Riot Discovery Studio, months before it has a game title
- Five offices across LA, Mercer Island, Sydney, Shanghai and Guangzhou means follow-the-sun development, not one LA room
- A Creative Director and Art Director are already seated, so the world's visual and narrative direction is locked enough to staff production around
- Hiring a producer to fold 'external vendor work' into internal pipelines is the outsourcing signal of a project entering content scale
- Combat, controls, targeting and camera are still on a prototype team, so the action-versus-tab-target question is genuinely open
- A Sydney 'Tech Foundations' listing asks an engineer to architect the 'foundational social and store systems', meaning the shop is being designed now, not bolted on
- The public MMO recruiting page saying there are no openings while 19 roles sit under the studio label is a communications gap worth watching
What Riot Has Actually Confirmed
One sentence covers it. The game is set in Runeterra. Not which regions, not how much of the map, not the era, the platform or the business model. Riot has revealed none of that, and the scope is unknown.
What Riot does have is a world it has already animated at feature quality. The 2021 Ruination cinematic is the closest League has come to filming the thing a Combat & Controls designer would be asked to make playable: the Black Mist takes a coastline, a running fight forms around it, and it finishes in front of a fortress that is already burning.

Look at those five frames against the craft-lead list and the org chart stops being an org chart. Characters, Environment, VFX and Animation are exactly the four disciplines that sequence is made of, and Riot says all four already have leads. A
Riven swing has weight because an animator built the recovery into it, and translating that feel into a game full of other players is the open job.

The map below is the fiction all of this draws on. It is not a starting zone, and the crests under it are not a launch list. Which parts of this world are in the game, and how much of it, is unrevealed.

Take the craft-lead list literally and you can see the size of the assignment. The Howling Abyss is a frozen bridge over a bottomless chasm where the Watchers were sealed away. The Sump is the lowest and most toxic level of Zaun, where the desperate survive. Bilgewater Harbor is a lawless port built into coastal cliffs and run by rival captains. The Placidium of Navori is a sacred site where a Noxian defeat turned an invasion into a war of attrition.
Four locations, four completely different environment briefs. Riot has not said which pieces of that inventory the game is built from, or how many. Our read is that somebody inside the building has already decided, because you cannot staff an Environment lead against a world nobody has picked.
So watch the combat role. Whoever takes it settles the argument the poll below is about, and until they do, the honest answer to how the Riot MMO plays is that nobody outside a small prototype team in Los Angeles knows.
Your Take
Should Riot's MMO commit to action combat rather than tab-targeting?
What to Watch
Riot has dated nothing beyond the listings themselves. Here is the reporting this piece builds on.
