What Riot Posted
A named Riot engineering manager posted the role himself, and the requisition behind it is live on riotgames.com.
Riot’s MMO does not have a finished renderer. It has a job ad for the person who is going to build one.
Orlando Salvatore, Senior Engineering Manager on the League MMO, posted the opening himself at 18:28 UTC on August 3, 2026. He wrote that he is "looking for a Principal Software Engineer for Rendering on the League MMO," and described the work as "Building engine tech from the ground up, keeping performance in check at MMO scale, and making tools our artists genuinely enjoy using."
Our players deserve world-class rendering. Let’s build it.
— Orlando Salvatore, Senior Engineering Manager on the League MMO, his post on X
The listing behind that post is live: "Principal Software Engineer, Rendering - Unpublished R&D Product," Los Angeles, on the Unpublished MMO team, requisition 8078139. Its responsibilities describe "building engine technology for a new AAA game." The listing itself never names the game.
His ask, in his own shorthand: "8+ yrs in rendering eng (2+ leading a team), deep UE/Unity experience, multithreaded systems chops, comfort at MMO scale. Nanite/Houdini/UE5 PCG a plus." The Required Qualifications say the same thing in HR language, with one line that does not usually appear on a graphics req: "Experience working on an MMO."
The Tech Tell
Nanite, Houdini and UE5 PCG sit in the desired qualifications, and together they describe a way of building a world.
Desired qualifications are where a listing stops being boilerplate and starts describing the work. Riot wants "Experience with Nanite" and "Experience with procedural content generation tools (i.e. Houdini, UE5 PCG, etc.)."
Nanite is Unreal Engine 5’s virtualized geometry system. It draws only the triangles a frame actually needs, so an artist can drop a film-density mesh into a landscape instead of hand-building a low-poly stand-in of it. UE5 PCG is Unreal’s procedural content generation framework, and Houdini is the procedural tool most studios put next to it.
The tech tell
Nanite and UE5 PCG only exist in Unreal Engine 5
The Required Qualifications ask for experience with "various game engines (i.e. Unreal, Unity, etc.)," so the requirement line is engine-agnostic. The desired line is not. We covered the earlier listings that named Unreal outright.
Put together, those three describe a pipeline where terrain, foliage and clutter are generated by rule and then art-directed, rather than placed by hand one asset at a time. Riot has not said that is how it builds its world. It has said it wants people who know how.
The other half of the post is tooling, and that is a separate hire in most studios. Engineers who build editor tools artists like are not the same people as engineers who chase frame times. Riot asked for both in one seat, which is what "principal" is doing in the title.

The Details
The load-bearing lines from the post and the listing, plus the February seat that came before it.
This is the second time Salvatore has gone looking for this seat. He posted a Principal Rendering Engineer role for the League MMO on February 21, 2026 under requisition 7593319, and that post reached 117,011 views. Riot has not said whether requisition 8078139 replaces it or sits beside it as a second seat, and both readings are unflattering in their own way: a principal rendering role open five and a half months later is either hard to fill or bigger than one person.

What This Means for the Riot MMO
Our read, and it is speculative: what a from-scratch renderer and a procedural toolchain say about where this project actually is.
This is not a leak and not a datamine. It is the engineering manager on the project describing what his team is doing in August 2026: building engine technology from the ground up, roughly two and a half years after Riot reset the MMO in March 2024.
A renderer you are still building from the ground up is not a renderer you are polishing for a reveal. Engine work genuinely does run alongside content production, sometimes right up to ship, and that is the honest counter-argument. But "from the ground up" is early-tech language, and it is his phrasing, not ours.
A renderer you are still building from the ground up is not a renderer you are polishing for a reveal.
The hard requirement is the second tell. Not general graphics talent: "Experience working on an MMO," plus "comfort at MMO scale." Riot keeps buying people who have already shipped this genre, which is the pattern behind the WoW combat lead it hired and the server-tech studio it has been stacking in Sydney.
It is not all imports. Riot moves its own people onto the project too, including a 2XKO producer, and it is staffing the commercial layer at the same time as the engine, with an opening for an engineer to architect the in-game store. Rendering, servers, storefront. Read that against the earlier hiring waves and the listing still calls it an R&D product, but it is staffed like something being shipped.
| In the job ad | On the record about the game | |
|---|---|---|
| Renderer | Being built "from the ground up" | Riot has said nothing publicly |
| World tooling | Nanite, Houdini and UE5 PCG listed as desired | Not revealed |
| Genre | "Experience working on an MMO" is a hard requirement | It is an MMO. That much Riot has said. |
| Setting | Not mentioned. The listing says "Unpublished R&D Product" | Runeterra |
| Scope, regions, era | Not mentioned | Not revealed |
| Platforms | Performance and artist tooling "across platforms" | Not revealed |
| Release window | Not mentioned | Not revealed |
| Business model | Not mentioned | Not revealed |
Runeterra is the only confirmed fact about this game. Not the scope, not the regions, not the era, not the platforms, not the business model. So the useful question a rendering listing raises is not which zone ships first. It is what kind of world this tooling would have to hold up.
Riot has been drawing that world for years, and its own "Shurima: Rise of the Ascended" is the clearest answer on file. Sivir, "the last in the bloodline of Azir, Shurima’s lost emperor," bleeds into the sand, and the narration walks through what happens next: "First Azir’s mind, then his body. Snatched back from oblivion to be reborn."

The art at the top of this piece is
Taliyah, who moves stone by hand in the fiction. The cinematic’s payoff is
Azir doing it to an entire city.
Our Atlas already charts the pieces of that last shot: the Sun Disc of Shurima above the city, the sealed Tomb of the Emperors below it, and the Great Sai, the desert all of it sits in.
Cross the map and the terrain problem changes shape entirely. The Zoantha Cascade is a desert and cliff formation our Atlas records as unique, the kind of landmark you hand-author whatever your pipeline does. Ornn’s Forge burns under a Freljord volcano. The Howling Abyss is a frozen bridge over a bottomless chasm. Ionia’s Placidium of Navori is built architecture rather than landscape at all.
Hand-authoring that range at League’s art density is a decade of work. Generating it by rule and then art-directing the result is the reason Houdini and PCG are on a wish list at all. How much of it any player ever stands in is unrevealed, and Riot has given no indication either way.

None of that says what the MMO ships with. It says what its renderer would have to be able to draw, and Riot is still hiring the person who will make it draw anything at all.
Your Take
An engine renderer still being built "from the ground up" in August 2026: does that push the Riot MMO past 2028 for you?
Where This Goes Next
Riot has put no date on anything in this story, so the thing to watch is the board: which of these seats closes, and what opens next to it.
Reported from Salvatore’s posts on X and the live riotgames.com listing. The read on the MMO is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
