Heads up: the news here is real and sourced. The read on what it means for the unannounced Riot MMO is ours, and speculative where labelled. RuneGrove covers everything through one lens: what it tells us about the MMO.

Source: Windows Central, checked against the Battle.net shop listing, Icy Veins, GamingHQ and Blizzard's November 2025 developer post.

What Blizzard Is Selling

Two Kul Tiran housing bundles went on sale on October 26 for about $35 together.

Blizzard, the studio behind World of Warcraft, wrote down a year ago that race-themed housing decor would never be sold for money in the game. On October 26 it put Grimtide, a haunted-pirate decor set, in the shop as two packs built on Kul Tiran, a playable race of seafaring humans that players unlock as an Allied Race.

  • Two bundles. The Haunted Grimtide Estate costs 2,500 Hearthsteel, or $25. The Grimtide Decor Pack costs 1,000 Hearthsteel, or $10.
  • The currency. Hearthsteel, the premium currency Blizzard made for housing, converts at 100 to $1, so the two packs together run about $35.
  • The look. Both packs pair a pirate theme with a Lovecraftian one.
  • On sale until. Icy Veins, the WoW guide site, lists the Grimtide Decor Pack offer as running through December 1, 2026.

Player housing is the feature WoW shipped with Midnight, its current expansion. We covered the old engine problem Blizzard says nearly kept housing out of the game; this week the argument is about the shop attached to it.

The Line Blizzard Drew

Blizzard's own November 2025 post said race-fantasy decor would not be sold in the shop.

The packs sit on the wrong side of a rule Blizzard published itself.

  • The post. On November 6, 2025 Blizzard published "Developer Insight: Hearthsteel Virtual Currency and Housing in Midnight", a set of principles for what the housing shop would sell.
  • The rule. One principle says decor tied to a race or class fantasy, or already in Azeroth, stays out of the shop.
  • The conflict. Kul Tiran is a playable race, and the packs are built on that race's look.
  • No answer yet. Windows Central asked Blizzard for comment; as of October 29 Blizzard had not clarified anything.

Housing items tied to core fantasies of a player's race or class, or that already exist in Azeroth, won't be sold in the shop.

Blizzard has not said whether it reads Grimtide as a Kul Tiran fantasy or as generic haunted-pirate decor. Until it does, the shop and the post say different things.

Who Noticed

The listing and the old rule were side by side on X within a day.

Players put the listing and the old post side by side within a day.

  • The screenshot. Tyrsenus, a WoW player on X, posted Blizzard's principles with the race rule marked as "principle #2".
  • The loudest post. Bellular, the WoW YouTuber Michael Bell, shared the store link on October 27: "When their words mean nothing, Interviews are a waste of time." It passed 198,000 views.
  • The repost. Pirat_Nation, a gaming news account on X, wrote up the contradiction the same day and drew about 88,000 views.
  • The press. Windows Central and GamingHQ, both gaming news sites, covered the backlash.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

Riot has no MMO business model on record; WoW just showed what a broken written promise costs.

Riot has never put a business model for its MMO on the record, so it has no written line to cross yet.

  • The only quote. Greg Street, then the MMO's game director, tweeted in January 2022 that Riot hoped "players spend money because they want to not because they feel like they have to."
  • Before the reset. Street left Riot in March 2023, and the project was reset in March 2024, so that line describes the company, not this game.
  • The track record. Riot's games are free to play and make their money on cosmetics.
  • Scope unknown. The MMO is set in Runeterra. Its scope, platform, price and whether it has housing at all are unrevealed.

Our read. The price is not the problem; a $10 decor pack is ordinary. The broken written rule is. A cosmetic-funded MMO would sell the same kind of identity fantasy Blizzard ruled out, so whatever line Riot writes first is the one players will screenshot.

Blizzard's crackdown on gold routed through middlemen shows how much policing a cash economy needs once it exists. We made a related point about what happens when someone puts a number on a world.

Your Take

Reader poll

Should the Riot MMO publish its cosmetic shop rules before launch, even if players will hold Riot to them?

What to Watch

The offer end date Icy Veins lists, then more RuneGrove reads on WoW housing and money.

The Grimtide Decor Pack offer ends

Icy Veins lists it as a timed offer, so it may leave the shop without Blizzard saying anything.

Reported from Windows Central, GamingHQ, Icy Veins, the Battle.net shop and Blizzard's November 2025 developer post. The MMO read is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
