Heads up: the news here is real and sourced. The read on what it means for the unannounced Riot MMO is ours, and speculative where labelled. RuneGrove covers everything through one lens: what it tells us about the MMO.

What Happened

Blizzard plans big Forever updates about every four months, with timed unlocks in between.

How often should a new MMO ship big content? Blizzard, the studio behind World of Warcraft, just answered for World of Warcraft: Forever, called Forever below, its new version of the original game. The answer is slower than anything it runs today.

  • Every 17 weeks. Principal game designer Kris Zierhut told IGN the target is “once every four months or 17 weeks or three times a year.”
  • Smaller unlocks between. Between the major updates, smaller pieces unlock on a timed event calendar.
  • Discovery was too fast. He said Season of Discovery, a seasonal experiment on WoW Classic, Blizzard's re-release of the original game, got updates "way too fast" at roughly 8-10 weeks.
  • Droughts feel bad too. He also named the opposite problem: a huge patch followed by months of silence.
  • Modern WoW stays faster. Live World of Warcraft has run an 8-week cycle since Dragonflight, the 2022 expansion.
  • Spring 2027 first. The BlizzCon roadmap puts the first major update in spring 2027, with new raids, dungeons, quests and a PvP season.
  • Summer 2027 second. The second lands in summer 2027 with a new raid, two dungeons and a legendary quest chain.

It's not just patch day comes [around], here's a content fire hose, and now we're silent for four months.

Forever launches November 4, 2026, and its first three raids are already on the calendar, so the first four months are planned before the first patch.

Where Forever Stays

Forever keeps its world to the original two continents, with only small trips beyond them.

  • Two continents. The Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, the original game's two continents, stay Forever's home base.
  • No new capitals. No new capital cities are in the current plan.
  • Short visits possible. Northrend and Pandaria, lands from later expansions, and the Dark Portal could get small visits such as a dungeon or a quest.
  • Housing on the list. Player housing and Silvermoon, the blood elf capital, are not planned but sit on the team's list.

That fits what Forever has already shown: it adds zones Classic never had inside the old map instead of opening a new one.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

Patch rhythm is one of the first live-service calls a new MMO makes, and Riot has made none in public.

  • Nothing announced. Riot has not said how often its MMO would ship content, and its scope is unrevealed.
  • Riot patches fast. League of Legends, Riot's five-on-five battle game, patches every two weeks.
  • Blizzard's own warning. Blizzard calling an 8-10 week pace "way too fast" in an MMO argues against carrying that two-week rhythm over.
  • Calendar fills gaps. Timed unlocks between big patches keep a world active without building a new patch each month.

Our read. Blizzard now runs two cadences side by side and says its faster Classic test was a mistake. A new MMO has no back catalogue to lean on, so the rhythm it picks at launch is the one players judge it by. Forever has already reworked racials in one patch and reversed a server call in a week, so expect the four-month plan to get tested too.

What to Watch

Three dates decide whether the plan holds.

  • Launch day. Forever opens November 4, 2026.
  • First big update. Spring 2027 brings the first major update on the roadmap.
  • Second big update. Summer 2027 is the second, the test of whether the four-month gap holds.
