Riot MMO Development Timeline

The real-world history of Riot's Runeterra MMO, from the 2020 reveal through the 2024 reset to the latest playtest, each step rated by how far to trust it.

Key: Confirmed by Riot · Pre-reset (rumored or superseded) · Adjacent canon · Forecast (an estimate, not a promise).

  1. 2016 — Internal R&D begins (Adjacent)
Riot quietly prototypes an MMO years before any public hint.
  2. Dec 17, 2020 — The reveal (Confirmed)
Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street announces a Runeterra MMO — text only, no trailer, no art.
  3. 2020–22 — Early design pillars (Pre-reset)
“Respect your time,” free-to-play, third-person action combat — likely superseded by the reset.
  4. Oct 2022 — Riot acquires its Sydney studio (Confirmed)
The ex-Wargaming / BigWorld team — large-world MMO tech pedigree — joins Riot.
  5. Mar 2023 — Ghostcrawler departs (Confirmed)
The MMO’s public face leaves Riot; the project continues under new leadership.
  6. Oct 2023 — One unified Runeterra canon (Confirmed)
The MMO, Arcane and Legends of Runeterra are bound into a single continuity — the world we can map today.
  7. Mar 2024 — Reboot & “go dark” (The reset)
The build is scrapped for being “a Runeterra coat of paint.” Fabrice Condominas takes over as EP and the team goes quiet — silence by design. Everything before this point is now unreliable.
  8. Jan 2026 — World of Warcraft veterans recruited (Confirmed)
Ex-WoW lead producer Raymond Bartos joins the team — the first sign of renewed momentum.
  9. Jun 2026 — Combat lead hired (Confirmed)
Ex-WoW class & PvP designer Brian Holinka joins as principal designer — more senior WoW DNA steering combat.
  10. Jun 2026 — First playtest signal (Confirmed, Latest)
Holinka reveals he watched an internal playtest the night before — dungeons and raids are already running for testers. The strongest sign yet that the post-reset build is genuinely playable.
  11. 2027–29 — Realistic launch window (Forecast)
Our read: 2027 at the earliest, 2028–29 most likely. Mark everything here as estimate, not promise.
  12. < 2030 — Runeterra goes live (Target)
The only window Riot has committed to — and the destination this whole site is built to be ready for.
