Should the race you roll decide which weapon you are best with? For World of Warcraft: Forever, a new version of the original game, the answer is now no. Blizzard, the studio making it, posted beta notes on October 16 that replace the Human, Orc and Dwarf weapon racials, the bonuses each playable race carries, with flat critical strike bonuses.
What Happened
Blizzard's latest WoW Forever beta notes cut the weapon-locked racials for Humans, Orcs and Dwarves and retune racials across nine races before the November launch.
The weapon racials
- The notes. Kaivax, a Blizzard community manager, posted the WoW Forever Beta Development Notes on October 16 under the title "Updated October 15".
- Humans. Sword Specialization is "Replaced with Ruthless: 2% increased critical strike chance."
- Orcs. Axe Specialization is "Replaced with Savage: 1% increased critical strike chance."
- Dwarves. Mace Specialization is "Replaced with Earth Fury: 2% increased critical damage and healing."
- No weapon lock. None of the three races now pushes a player toward one weapon type.
The same build changed Touch of the Dead, an Undead racial, and the developers explained why in one line.
This shouldn't have been in place because it's a racial, not a Class spell or ability.

Buffs and nerfs across nine races
- Orc nerfs. Blood Fury's cooldown rises to 3 minutes from 2, and Shatter Curse now dispels Curses and Banes but cuts magic damage taken by 5%, down from 15%.
- Trolls. The Regeneration bonus doubles to 20% from 10%.
- Tauren. War Stomp's cooldown drops to 90 seconds from 2 minutes.
- Skyborne. Skyborne, the new race Forever adds, gets Wind Blessed haste raised to 3% from 1%, and Skysight and Read Leyline can now be cast while moving.
- Also buffed. Gnomes and Night Elves get buffs in the same build, which touches racials for nine races in all.

The reaction
- Biggest ever. GameSpot called them some of the biggest racial changes in the game's history; Massively OP and Hotspawn covered the patch too.
- Against. One forum thread, reported by games.gg, is titled "Congratulations on crying over racials, you just homogenized the game."
- For. A top reply there reads: "Good, racials should never dictate the race you play."
- The clock. The beta ends October 21 and Forever launches November 4, 2026.
What This Means for the Riot MMO
Blizzard just decided a race should not pick your weapon, and Riot has not said whether its MMO has races at all.
- Fixed in beta. Blizzard changed the racials during the beta, before launch, while no live character has been rolled yet.
- Second pass. An earlier build gave every Forever race four racials; this one reworks them again.
- Riot is silent. Riot has announced nothing about playable races or racial abilities in its MMO, and the game's scope is unrevealed.
- Combat designer. Brian Holinka, principal game designer on the Riot MMO, spent about 11 years on World of Warcraft's PvP and combat design (the hire, and Forever's PvP ladder).
- Lead producer. Raymond Bartos, a former WoW lead producer, is on the same Riot team.
| Race design | WoW Forever, after this build | Riot MMO, on the record |
|---|---|---|
| Playable races | Yes, including the new Skyborne. | Not revealed |
| Race-bound weapon bonus | Cut for Humans, Orcs and Dwarves; flat crit bonuses instead. | Not revealed |
| Racials in combat | Yes, and still tuned: Blood Fury, Shatter Curse, War Stomp. | Not revealed |
Our read. A weapon racial tells every sword player which race to roll. A flat crit bonus helps any build, so the choice leans on look and faction instead. Blizzard picked that side before launch. If Riot ships races at all, it gets the same forum argument, and two people on its team have worked inside this exact system.
What to Watch
Two dated beats remain before WoW Forever's racials are locked in at launch.
WoW Forever beta ends
The last window for another racial pass before launch.
WoW Forever launches
The racials ship as written here unless Blizzard changes them again.
- Five days left. Blizzard has five days of beta left after these notes to adjust racials again.
- Launch build. The November 4 launch shows whether the three new crit racials survive as written.
- Riot's first word. Any Riot statement on playable races would be the first on record.
Your Take
Should a Riot MMO race ever change which build is strongest?
Reported from Blizzard's official WoW Forever Beta Development Notes, with GameSpot, Massively OP, Hotspawn and games.gg for coverage and forum reaction. The read on the unannounced Riot MMO is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
