Heads up: the news here is real and sourced. The read on what it means for the unannounced Riot MMO is ours, and speculative where labelled. RuneGrove covers everything through one lens: what it tells us about the MMO.

What Happened

The Riot MMO's executive producer answered Riot's PAX West panel card with an eyes emoji, and a fan tracker had it inside a minute.

One eyes emoji, no words, and 55,787 people looked. That is what the executive producer of the Riot MMO put under Riot's card for a PAX West panel called Expanding Runeterra, from an account with 8,274 followers, three days before the co-founder who greenlit his project opens the show in Seattle.

The card he answered closes a thread Riot Games posted on August 31 at 17:10 UTC to lay out its Seattle lineup: a storytime keynote from Marc Merrill, a community meetup, and dev panels on League of Legends Classic, VALORANT's Summit map, and a Teamfight Tactics and Riftbound collab on expanding Runeterra. Every item got its own image card. The last one went up in the same minute with no text of its own.

TEAMFIGHT TACTICS X RIFTBOUND DEV PANEL - EXPANDING RUNETERRA - TFT and Riftbound devs will share how each game expands the lore and brings the world of Runeterra to life with each set. SUNDAY, 12 - 1PM, MAIN THEATRE.

The art on that card makes the same argument without words. A Riftbound champion card fronts it, and the champion on it is SonaSona, a Demacian, printed for a card game so that a Teamfight Tactics set and a tabletop set can hand players the same world from two directions. Two games, one Runeterra, a set at a time.

On September 1 at 13:43 UTC, Fabrice Condominas replied to that card with a single eyes emoji and nothing else. He has been executive producer of the Riot MMO since the project reset in March 2024, the reset Merrill announced himself. One minute later, at 13:44 UTC, the MMO tracker @RiotMMONews quote-tweeted the reply with a thinking-face emoji and 'Mh..'.

Then the arithmetic got strange. The reply has pulled 55,787 views off those 8,274 followers. Riot's own card that it hangs under shows 113,397, and the thread's lead card 93,818. The fan tracker's quote-tweet shows 40,871. A wordless reply from a small account is doing roughly half the traffic of the official post it is attached to, and a fan quoting that reply is doing about a third.

He has done this before. In June 2026 he answered producer Sarah Tudor's post announcing she had joined the Riot MMO with the same bare eyes emoji, and the trackers ran with that one too. The emoji confirms nothing about the MMO. What is verified is who replied what, to what, and when.

The emoji confirms nothing about the MMO.

PAX West 2026 runs September 4-7 at the Seattle Convention Center. Merrill opens it. Riot's co-founder, co-chair and chief product officer takes the Storytime keynote on Friday, September 4, 11AM-12PM in the Main Theatre, in conversation with Greg Miller. Expanding Runeterra has the Sunday slot, September 6, 12 to 1PM in the same room.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

Riot's panel is about growing Runeterra one set at a time. An MMO cannot ship the world in slices, and the MMO's producer was watching.

Here is the speculative part, labelled as such. Expanding Runeterra reads like a job description for the game Condominas runs. TFT and Riftbound, by Riot's own card copy, bring the world to life with each set: a character here, a place there, every drop another piece of canon. An MMO cannot ship the world in pieces. Whatever part of Runeterra it opens in, and Riot has not said which part or how much, that part has to be walkable, and it has to agree with everything the other games have already printed.

That agreement problem is not hypothetical. Riot has printed a Bandle City tea maker who blended two leaves wrong, fell asleep, and woke up on the far side of a door that is supposed to need a specialist, which is a gag on a card and a rule about how Bandle City's portals work at the same time. Freljord has a Frostguard lodge whose carved roll of the dead ends more than half its names in a death rune, every one of them lost on the same climb. Each of those is a detail an MMO would have to honor on the ground, and Sunday's panel is Riot explaining in public how it keeps making them.

There is a second question underneath, and Guild Wars 3 answered it while Riot has not: who are you in a world already full of heroes? A card game never has to answer it. You draft Sona or you do not, and nobody asks what you would be doing standing next to her. An MMO has to put you on the same street and still make you matter.

The timing is the other half of the story. Merrill takes the main stage on Friday, two days before the Runeterra panel, and he is the executive sponsor who announced the March 2024 reset that made Condominas the MMO's executive producer. The last time the project's leadership said anything at all in public was the 'see you in Runeterra' note they broke cover with during gaming's worst layoff week. Nobody has said the MMO will come up in Seattle, and this piece is not saying it will.

The honest read is smaller than the view count. Riot is sending TFT and Riftbound devs to talk about Runeterra, not the MMO team, and the MMO's own producer is in the replies rather than on a panel. Twice in three months a bare emoji from that account has become the news. The silence holds. What has changed is how hard the audience is willing to read two eyes.

The read for the MMO:
  • The MMO inherits a franchise-wide lore pipeline. TFT and Riftbound expand Runeterra set by set, and the MMO's world has to stay consistent with both.
  • Riot's canon now grows through card sets and autobattler seasons, which fixes far more of the MMO's world than any internal lore bible would.
  • A bare emoji pulling 55,787 views on an 8,274-follower account is the amplification test passing: the audience for MMO signal is far larger than the account sending it.
  • Merrill's Friday keynote puts the MMO's executive sponsor on a main stage two days before the Runeterra lore panel, the closest the project comes to a public appearance this year.
  • Riot's other Runeterra products get panels and the MMO team gets none, which is the shape of a project still years from showing anything playable.

Riot already has a three-minute answer to what bringing the world of Runeterra to life looks like, and it predates every set TFT and Riftbound have shipped. Warriors, the Season 2020 cinematic, opens on CaitlynCaitlyn on a balcony in Piltover with her rifle up, then sends EzrealEzreal through a dust-lit passage under the city.

It moves to Demacia, where GarenGaren holds a wall with SylasSylas's chains in frame, and near the end it hands Kai'SaKai'Sa a burst of Void energy to fire through. Three regions in about three minutes, every frame drawn from the world the MMO is set in.

Kai'Sa firing through a burst of Void energy (2:58)

Each of those places has an atlas page on this site. Demacia's capital, the Great City of Demacia, was raised on petricite, the white stone that smothers magic, and the Mageseekers' Compound is where the kingdom's mage-hunters hold what they catch. Icathia is the ruin of the first city the Void ever ate.

The Void is the one crest below with no capital you could visit. What it has is what it has swallowed, from Icathia to the drowned city Bel'Veth remade as the Lavender Sea. Noxus has the opposite problem. Its crest points at the Immortal Bastion, the fortress Mordekaiser raised long before the empire grew around it.

The map below and the crests under it are that fiction: the world Riot draws on for League, for TFT, for Riftbound, and the single confirmed fact about the MMO. They are not a starting zone and not a launch list. Which regions the MMO opens in, how much of Runeterra it uses, what era it sits in, what it runs on and how it charges are all unrevealed, and nothing here guesses at any of them.

Will the Riot MMO get a mention on stage at PAX West?

What to Watch

Three dated PAX West beats, and our earlier reporting on the people and the world involved.

September 4

Storytime with Marc Merrill, 11AM-12PM, Main Theatre

The executive sponsor who announced the March 2024 reset, in conversation with Greg Miller. Nobody has promised an MMO line, and if one comes it is official by definition.

September 6

Expanding Runeterra, 12 to 1PM, Main Theatre

The panel Condominas answered with an emoji. Listen for what TFT and Riftbound devs mean by expanding the canon.

September 7

PAX West closes at the Seattle Convention Center

Riot's Seattle lineup is a keynote, a meetup and three dev panels, and none of them belongs to the MMO. Whether that holds through Monday is the question.

Reported from Fabrice Condominas (@Faburisu) on X and corroborating coverage. The MMO read is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
