What Happened
League Classic is ending its current run in January 2027 because most of its players went back to the live game in under three months.
Why Riot is ending it
- The /dev post. Riot designers Meddler and Pabro wrote on October 14, 2026 that League Classic, the throwback mode that recreates early-era League of Legends, ends its current run in January 2027.
- The reason. Riot's post says "most have gone back to other parts of League."
- Under three months. Classic launched on July 29, 2026 with patch 26.15, after a reveal at the MSI 2026 grand final.
- Through Season 3. Classic stays playable through the rest of the live game's current season, Season 3. Several outlets give January 6, 2027 as the end; Riot's post says only January 2027.
- Coming back. Riot plans to bring Classic back later, "likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions."
- A promised follow-up. Riot will share what worked, what could have gone "more classic," and "where sticking too closely to the past may have held the experience back."

What changes on October 21
- Windowed queues. From patch 26.21 on October 21, Classic queues in KR, LAN, LAS, TW, VN, TR, SEA, OCE and RU open only during set hours.
- The hours. Weekdays run 4PM to 12AM and weekends 10AM to 1AM, server time. Riot names lower play rates, long queue times and MMR (matchmaking rating) discrepancies as the reasons.
- Custom games only. Japan (JP1) and MENA (ME1) move to custom matches only.
- Classic refunds. Riot is refunding Classic-only paid content that players can no longer use. Insider Gaming reports a November 30, 2026 refund deadline.
- Free battle pass. The Act II Classic Battle Pass has one unified free track.
- Smaller store. The Classic store will sell only champions, runes and rune pages.

Champions and skins still coming
- Patch 26.20. Adds Irelia, Karma, Quinn, Aatrox and Caitlyn.
- Patch 26.21. Adds Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim and Lucian.
- Voted in. Volibear, Urgot and Udyr arrive by patch 26.23. They were the top three in a Council poll, the player vote on what Classic adds next.
- Two skins on hold. On October 15, Spideraxe, a dataminer who covers Riot's games on X, reported that Meddler told him Rustiest Blitzcrank and Prestige Classic Baron Kog'Maw "haven't been forgotten about."
- A different release. Per the same report, the team is working out a different way to release both skins.

What This Means for the Riot MMO
Riot reset its MMO in 2024 for being too close to existing games, and now says copying the past too closely may have held League Classic back.
- The 2024 reset. Riot co-founder Marc Merrill announced the MMO's reset in March 2024, saying its first vision "just wasn't different enough from what you can play today."
- Split queues. Riot chose to run the 2013-era version beside the live game, and its queues thinned enough to need set hours. An MMO with several rulesets splits its players the same way.
- Back as an event. Event modes in Riot's games run for a limited time, so a Classic return would be a window to visit rather than a permanent queue.
- Refund record. Classic's refunds follow a 2009 recolour Riot paywalled and refunded six days later. Riot has not revealed how the MMO will make money.
- Blizzard goes classic. World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard's classic-style version capped at level 60, launches November 4, 2026, three weeks after Riot's Classic post.
Our read. Riot has now said the same thing about two of its projects. The MMO was reset for sitting too close to games people already play, and Classic may have been held back by staying too close to the past. If the MMO ever offers an old-school ruleset, Classic's thin queues argue for a limited event over a permanent server.
What to Watch
The next dates for Classic, and for the classic-style game Blizzard launches in November.

Your Take
League Classic lost most of its players in under three months. Should Riot's MMO still offer a classic-style ruleset or server?
