Heads up: the news here is real and sourced. The read on what it means for the unannounced Riot MMO is ours, and speculative where labelled. RuneGrove covers everything through one lens: what it tells us about the MMO.

What Happened

ArcheAge Chronicles is betting MMO players will pay $29.99 up front for a game that promises never to sell power, and the bet goes live in Steam Early Access on November 3.

The launch

  • November 3 launch. ArcheAge Chronicles, the action MMORPG from XLGAMES set on the continent of Auroria, opens in Steam Early Access, Steam's paid release of an unfinished game, on November 3 at 3 p.m. PT, 6 p.m. ET.
  • The studio. XLGAMES is the Korean studio behind the original ArcheAge, and it announced the date on October 27.
  • The price. The game costs $29.99 in North America and 36,000 won in Korea, with other regions priced separately.
  • Pre-orders open now. Pre-ordering adds the Dawn Pioneer outfit, a cosmetic, for one class.
  • Self-published. XLGAMES is publishing the game itself after Kakao Games, its former publishing partner, stepped back in August.

What Early Access ships

  • Three regions. Players get three regions of Auroria: Diamond Shores, Gylden Ruins and Astron Plains.
  • Four classes. There are four classes and eight weapons, two per class.
  • The full loop. Dungeons, raids, PvP (player-versus-player combat), housing, crafting, trading, and company and guild activities are all in from day one.
  • Nine to 12 months. XLGAMES expects Early Access to last about nine to 12 months before full release.

How it got here

  • A top-five demo. The demo XLGAMES ran during Steam Next Fest, Steam's festival of free game demos, ranked 5th on the Most Played Demos list.
  • First public PvP. That demo was the first public build with PvP, open-world fights on Diamond Shores, as we covered when it went live.
  • Action combat. Fights are action-based: players dodge, block and parry on timing rather than picking a target and cycling abilities.

The Business Model

Buy once, no subscription, no store at launch, and a stated ban on selling power.

  • Buy-to-play. Executive producer Yongjin Ham, who runs the project at XLGAMES, set the model in an October 22 developer video: one purchase, no subscription.
  • No store yet. There is no paid in-game store at Early Access launch.
  • Power stays off sale. Pay-to-win items are "strictly excluded," in Ham's words, and he told Inven Global they were never part of the design.
  • Later purchases. Anything sold later covers content, customization and convenience, and XLGAMES says it will announce those items in advance.

P2W was not considered from the initial design stage.

That promise lands on a studio with history. The original ArcheAge became known for selling power, and XLGAMES has already admitted that pay-to-win problem while pitching its other sequel, ArcheAge S. It is also a different deal from the free MMO that charged $25 for its first five days: here the box is the whole price of entry.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

ArcheAge Chronicles is a live test of a pricing model Riot has never named for its MMO, and Riot has not said which model it will use.

  • No model on record. Riot has never put a business model on the record for its Runeterra MMO, and every game Riot sells today is free-to-play with cosmetics.
  • Old comments only. Greg Street, who led design on the MMO until he left Riot in March 2023, tweeted in January 2022 that it would "almost certainly be consistent with Riot's other games."
  • Before the reset. Those comments predate the March 2024 reset, when Riot restarted the project, so they bind nothing about the current game. Our deep dive on pay-to-win covers the full record.
  • Opposite bet. A $29.99 box with no subscription is a different bet from the free-to-play cosmetic model every Riot game uses.
  • Advance notice. XLGAMES promised to announce any future store items before they ship, a standard players will hold Riot to as well.
  • Proof before launch. XLGAMES let anyone play PvP in a free demo before setting a date; Riot has shown no footage of its MMO at all.
  • Combat direction. Riot hired Brian Holinka, a longtime World of Warcraft combat and PvP designer, as a principal game designer; the action MMOs launching now, like the one that broke down its parry timing, keep landing on dodge and parry.

Our read. Riot has not said how its MMO will make money or how big it is, and both are unrevealed. What ArcheAge Chronicles gives Riot is data it does not have to pay for: whether MMO players will pay $29.99 up front for a promise of no power for sale, and whether that promise survives nine to 12 months of Early Access before a store opens.

What to Watch

The launch date is set; the store is the part still to come.

  • Launch day. Early Access opens November 3, and the first week of Steam player counts and reviews will show how the $29.99 price lands.
  • The first store. Watch for XLGAMES to announce its first paid items, and check whether they stay in content, customization and convenience.
  • Riot on money. Any Riot statement on the MMO business model would be the first since the 2024 reset.

Your Take

Would you pay a $30 box price for the Riot MMO if it meant no cash shop at launch?

Reported from Gematsu and corroborating coverage. The MMO read is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
