A Ceiling After Twelve Years
Heidel Ball 2026 produced a 33rd class, seven god bosses, a hard level cap, and a world championship.
Black Desert launched with a level bar that, for all practical purposes, never ended. On October 8 it ends at 75, and everything you would have earned past that gets paid out as flat combat stats instead. A twelve-year-old MMO just conceded that its own progression curve had outgrown the game attached to it, in public, with dates.
Pearl Abyss made the call at Heidel Ball 2026, held in Southern California on July 25, and published the official recap GM Note the next day. Three things came out of it: Agent, the game's 33rd class; Edania Part 2, which closes the first act of a story Black Desert started in 2014 and puts seven gods in the ground as the new endgame; and the level overhaul, phased in on August 13 and October 8.
Then a fourth announcement, aimed somewhere else entirely: Master Class: World Finals, a 320-player global championship at Pearl Abyss headquarters in South Korea in the first half of 2027, run once every four years, with flights, accommodation and meals covered by the studio. That is 32 classes across 10 regions, flown in, for a competitive event Black Desert has never held in its life.

The 33rd Class
Agent borrows his sister's revolvers on purpose, then deliberately changes the rhythm.
Agent is a revolver class in a game that already has one. Deadeye runs and guns. Agent, officially "The Silent Reaper that Never Misses", fires slower and harder, throws grenades, and carries a floating device called the Hexround for large area damage in place of the magic abilities most Black Desert classes get.
The official class profile is unusually blunt about the relationship. Main and sub-weapon: Revolvers and Hexround. Combat style: Melee/Ranged Hybrid. Specialties: Espionage and Infiltration. Family: "Deadeye (Sister)." Press reporting names the pair Edward Canary and Olivia and counts Agent as the game's 33rd class. His named main skill is "Hexround Reaper, Piercing Fate with a Black Bullet."

He arrives in Korea on July 29, on global PC July 30, and on console August 6. He ships with Succession and Awakening paths and no Ascension variant, so he lands with two build identities rather than three.
This is class-identity work done in the open, and it is worth reading next to the action MMO that broke its warrior down to the parry timing. Both studios are telling you exactly what a class feels like in the hands. Riot has not shown one.

Inner Edania closes the first act of a saga begun in 2014, and Pearl Abyss printed the gear checks on a slide.
Edania Part 2 is the payoff for a story that started with Black Desert's reveal in December 2014. The official wording: "Adventurers will finally arrive at the heart of Edania, the destination of the first grand saga." Inner Edania holds seven bosses. The reveal slides named two new regions, Aphrodon (Agris's Domain) and Magaia (Elion's Domain), plus a new boss, Agris.
Pearl Abyss also published the gear checks instead of leaving players to datamine them. Recommended AP/DP by monster zone, read off the reveal slide: Sulfur Golem 400/470, Agris 400/470, Markthanan 405/485, Elion 410/490, Aal 415/495, Elion (Party) 415/500, and Hadum at 420/510. Some of the new zones are solo-only. Others require a party.

The level overhaul lands in two steps. The cap rises to 70 on August 13 and to 75 on October 8 on NAEU; press reports the Korean schedule as August 12 and October 7. Every level past 70 is worth Extra AP Against Monsters +3 and Monster Damage Reduction +3. Then it stops.
Once you reach Lv. 75, you will no longer gain EXP.
— Pearl Abyss, official Heidel Ball 2026 recap, GM Note
Pearl Abyss spent twelve years finding out that infinite levels are easier to ship than to balance. A cap you can reach is a number a designer can build content against. A bar that never fills is a moving target that every future zone has to be balanced around twice.

What This Means for the Riot MMO
Three questions Pearl Abyss answered in public, and the Runeterra characters and places that would have to answer them differently.
Riot has confirmed exactly one thing about its MMO: it is set in Runeterra. How much of the world you can walk, when in the timeline it sits, what it costs, what you play it on, none of that is revealed. So a reveal like this is not a comparison. It is a list of questions Riot has to answer from scratch, with one studio's answers already on the record.
Class identity is the sharpest of them right now, because Riot hired Brian Holinka as principal game designer on the MMO in June 2026, after nearly five years as World of Warcraft's lead combat designer and roughly eleven years at Blizzard. Agent versus Deadeye is a live case study in his exact discipline: same weapon family, deliberately different rhythm, no reskin.
Pearl Abyss spent twelve years finding out that infinite levels are easier to ship than to balance.
Runeterra has that problem waiting, several times over.
Miss Fortune,
Graves,
Lucian and
Jhin all fight with guns, and none of them plays like the others.
Add
Senna and
Caitlyn and that is six characters a class designer would have to keep apart on rhythm, range and recoil rather than on weapon type. In League each of them needs four abilities and a passive to feel distinct. A class has to hold that shape across hundreds of hours.
Riot has been drawing that distinction on screen for years. The Season 2020 cinematic opens on Piltover's sheriff lining up a shot from a clock tower, and the way she carries a rifle has nothing in common with how a Bilgewater outlaw carries a shotgun.

The endgame question maps onto Runeterra without anyone inventing anything. Seven gods as a boss ladder is a structure the fiction already stocks: the Shuriman Ascended are mortals raised into god-warriors at the Sun Disc of Shurima, and Bilgewater Harbor keeps its own horrors in the water outside it. Whether any of them is a raid boss, and whether you would need a group to reach one, is unrevealed.
| Question | Black Desert, as announced | Riot MMO |
|---|---|---|
| Playable classes | 33 once Agent lands | Not revealed |
| Level ceiling | Hard cap at 75, no EXP past it | Not revealed |
| Endgame ladder | Seven bosses behind published AP/DP checks | Not revealed |
| Solo or group | Solo-only and party-required zones side by side | Not revealed |
| Catch-up | Hyperboost: about 40 days of progression in four | Not revealed |
| Competitive layer | 320-player World Finals, once every four years | Not revealed |
| Setting | Edania, twelve years into one saga | Runeterra. The only confirmed fact. |
The solo-versus-party split is the one Riot will get shouted at about first. Black Desert is shipping both inside one region, which is a real answer to the argument World of Warcraft's new Lairs are also trying to settle. The 33rd-class treadmill is the long-run version of the complaint the man who built Ultima Online made about the whole genre: every addition has to stay distinct from everything already there, forever.

The map above and the crests under it are the world Riot is drawing on, not a starting zone. Which parts of Runeterra the MMO opens in, and how much of it exists at launch, has never been stated. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing.
Agent lands on global PC
Console follows on August 6. First look at whether the slower revolver reads as its own class in play.
Level cap rises to 70
The 75 ceiling follows on October 8, and every level between them pays flat combat stats.
Hadum boss and the Edania main quest
The 420/510 wall and the story beat that closes the first act.
Your Take
Should Riot's MMO put a hard level cap on character progression, the way Black Desert just did at 75?
Reported from Black Desert Official (Pearl Abyss) and corroborating coverage. The MMO read is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
