A Dragon Raid With No Safe Door
Dragonfire drops a 20-player raid boss into a full-loot world on August 31, and the PvP rules do not stop at the lair door.
Twenty players walk into a dragon's lair, and nothing in Albion Online's rules says a rival guild can't be waiting for them on the way out. That is the fight Sandbox Interactive has scheduled for August 31.
Dragonfire is a free update, announced on July 23, 2026. Its premise is that the Ashborn faction has woken the dragons of Albion’s past, and the named boss is Azaryon, the Fire Dragon, sitting deep inside a heavily guarded lair.
The studio is not being coy about the pitch. Its own announcement calls the Dragon Sanctuary a brand-new 20-player raid featuring Albion’s most epic PvE battle yet, and it calls the Azaryon fight the toughest PvE battle in the game’s history.

The raid sits inside a new region, the Ancient Lands, reached through portals onto floating islands, and difficulty scales the deeper a group pushes. Ashborn enemies and Fire Drakes hold the outer layers.
Player-versus-player threat is present throughout. Dragons also turn up in the open world on both the Royal Continent and the Outlands, spontaneously on the former and with advance warning on the latter, and dedicated players can raise a Fire Drake of their own.

The rollout has been steady. On July 24 the studio put Co-Creative Director Michael Schwahn on camera for a first look, and on July 27 it published a deeper walkthrough of the boss fights, the PvE encounters and the Ancient Lands.

Albion turned nine on July 21, 2026. It is a free-to-play cross-platform sandbox from Sandbox Interactive, on Steam since May 16, 2018, and the full-loot rules that made its name are the reason this raid is worth watching.

What This Means for the Riot MMO
Riot has confirmed one thing about its MMO, that it is set in Runeterra. How a scripted raid survives an open world is not one of the answers.
Riot has confirmed exactly one thing about its MMO: it is set in Runeterra. A job listing reported in October 2025 described the project as a persistent sandbox world where thousands of players interact seamlessly, and that is a report about a listing, not a design document.
Scripted group content and open-world PvP pull against each other, and Riot has never said publicly how it intends to reconcile them. Albion is about to run that experiment in public.
The question isn't whether Runeterra has a monster worth twenty people. It's who else is allowed to be standing there when you fight one.

| The decision | Albion Online, from August 31 | Riot's MMO |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Albion, a full-loot sandbox | Runeterra, the one confirmed detail |
| Raid size | 20 players, one fixed encounter | Not revealed |
| PvP where the boss lives | Present throughout the Ancient Lands | Not revealed |
| Named boss | Azaryon, the Fire Dragon | Not revealed |
| Price of the content | A free update | Not revealed |
- Scripted raid design and open PvP pull against each other. Sandbox Interactive is letting them collide instead of hiding the boss behind a safe portal
- Twenty players is a raid, not a dungeon group. That size commits a studio to fixed encounter scripting, tuning passes and a gear ladder that keeps feeding it
- A named boss billed as the hardest fight in the game’s history is a content anchor. A world without one reads as scenery
- A raisable mount attached to new content is cheap retention, and Riot’s live-service teams already know that trick
- Dragonfire ships free. Riot’s existing catalog is free-to-play monetized through cosmetics, and what the MMO would charge for is unrevealed
Raph Koster argued that every MMO since WoW converged on the same shapes, which we went through in his breakdown of why the genre feels the same. Albion’s answer is not a new shape for the raid. It is a refusal to make the room around the raid safe.
Filling twenty slots is the harder half of the problem. One developer shipped raids where 14 of your 15 raiders are bots, which is a scheduling answer dressed as a design answer, and it exists because twenty humans in one place at one time is genuinely hard to arrange.
Riot’s own hiring points somewhere else on PvP. The studio brought in the Blizzard veteran behind exactly that kind of seasonal, matchmade 12v12, and matchmade PvP is a different product from a lair another guild can walk into. A scripted boss is fragile either way, as Blizzard learned when a test spell killed a Mythic+ boss at 90% health.
Runeterra Already Has the Monsters
In Runeterra’s fiction, dragons are elemental forces of fire, earth, ocean, cloud and spirit, and they predate the first cities. The Elder Dragon crowns that order, and the elemental dragons have grown rare enough that only a handful of places on the continent still hold their nesting grounds.
Two champions sit closest to that material:
Shyvana, the Half-Dragon who serves uneasily in Demacia’s royal guard, and
Aurelion Sol, the Star Forger. None of that is announced MMO content. It is the shelf Riot gets to shop from.

Elder Dragon
Epic monsterWhy it is a raid boss: The most ancient of Runeterra’s dragons, powerful enough that its presence reshapes the ground around it. Its official card art is already a raid poster: a line of archers and torchbearers in a valley, one dragon filling the sky above them.

Elemental Dragon
Fire, ocean, mountain, cloudWhy it is a raid boss: Each one manifests an element and rewrites the terrain around it. An Infernal burns the brush away, an Ocean carves waterways, a Mountain raises rock. Encounter design and level design in the same creature.
Runeterra has also already staged the fight where enemies share a field. In the 2021 Ruination cinematic, the Black Mist rolls out from Helia and over the world, and Demacians, Noxians and Ionians end up swinging at the same thing.

Watch it as an encounter rather than a story and the whole Albion question shows up in it. A world event lands, and everyone who happens to be standing there is in the fight. In a full-loot world, everyone standing there includes the people who want your gear.

Six region crests sit under the map. Which of them a player could walk into, how much of the world the game covers, when it is set, and what it costs are all unrevealed. The map is the fiction Riot draws on, not a starting zone, and Riot has not said otherwise.
