What Happened

Final Fantasy XIV's next expansion slipped to February 23, 2027, and the same keynote cut the daily chores, long raid runs and loot luck a new MMO would otherwise copy.

The new date

  • New date. Evercold, Final Fantasy XIV's next expansion, launches February 23, 2027. Anyone who pre-orders gets early access from February 19.
  • Pre-orders. They open November 4, 2026. Standard Edition is $44.99 and the Digital Collector's Edition is $64.99.
  • The slip. Naoki Yoshida, FFXIV's director and producer, moved it out of January 2027 at Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo and said he made the call himself.
  • The apology. Yoshida apologized on stage: "We put forth every effort to get this done at the end of January," as quoted by PCGamesN.
  • Size of slip. Reports differ. MMORPG.com says the team needed about three more weeks, and Kotaku calls it about a month.

Routine and zones

  • Weeklies replace dailies. Weekly tasks replace older daily demands, according to PCGamesN and MMORPG.com.
  • Late claims. Rewards you didn't claim last week can still be collected later.
  • Any-order zones. After the opening area, three zones can be played in any order.
  • Automatic scaling. Those zones and their dungeons scale to the player's level.
  • New name, no fee. Seasons are a new name for two-patch cycles and cost nothing extra.

Raids

  • Split raids. Each tier of Alliance Raids, FFXIV's large group raids, is split into two parts.
  • Why split. MMORPG.com's live blog gives two reasons: full raids take too long, and their rewards are hard to design.
  • Assured loot. Everyone who takes part in a raid is assured a trade-in item. MMORPG.com's live blog says that removes the raid ballot, the draw for who gets a drop.

Combat

  • Two battle systems. Evolved, a new optional battle system, sits beside Reborn, the current one. You can switch whenever you could swap jobs, FFXIV's classes.
  • Still in testing. Evolved is implemented for all jobs, and balance testing is ongoing.
  • The Zephyr. This new ranged job starts at level 90, fights with a crossbow and a bird familiar called a Nephele, and only supports Evolved.

The dates are official statements from Square Enix, the company behind FFXIV. The system details come from press coverage of the keynote, and the official site says content is in development and subject to change.

What This Means for the Riot MMO

Riot has shown no progression, raid or loot systems for its MMO, so this says what a new MMO will be measured against, not what Riot will do.

  • Chore fatigue. Weekly tasks with late claims are now a public answer to daily chores, and any new MMO will be measured against it.
  • Levelling path. Any-order zones with scaling drop the linear levelling path, one of the oldest structures in the genre.
  • Session length. Splitting long raids in two answers a question Riot also faces, with an audience raised on short League matches.
  • Loot chase. Assured raid loot takes the luck out of the reward, while FFXIV keeps its chase in upgrades and harder difficulties.
  • Combat timing. Running two battle systems side by side shows how hard combat is to change in a live MMO. A new game can design for that before launch.
  • Reversal risk. Live changes don't always hold. WoW Forever reversed its RP-PvP call in a week, and Jagex killed RuneScape Reignited in 12 days.
  • Size of the game. The Escapist reports Square Enix claiming more than 35 million registered accounts. We couldn't check that against Square Enix, and Steam's store text still says over 30 million.

Our read. When Marc Merrill, Riot's co-founder, announced the March 2024 reset of its MMO, he said the initial vision "just wasn't different enough from what you can play today." What you can play today now has fewer chores, shorter raids and less loot luck. Riot has committed to none of this, the same as the seven retail WoW problems we covered.

Should the Riot MMO skip daily chores and build around weekly goals?
