Introduction: The Protector's Vow

Braum is known throughout the Freljord as a hero of immense strength and an even larger heart. An Iceborn revered for his legendary feats and cheerful disposition, he serves as a protector for all vulnerable people in the frozen north. With his massive enchanted shield, he embodies the hope of a unified, peaceful Freljord, living by a simple creed:

“Today, we fight as enemies. Tomorrow, we may fight as brothers.”

Every tavern and mead hall tells tales of his impossible strength—felling forests in a single night or punching a mountain to rubble. While the stories grow with each telling, they all stem from a simple, powerful upbringing that defined the hero he would become.

A Hero's Upbringing

From his earliest days, Braum was notably larger than other children. His mother, a respected herder, taught him that true strength wasn't for domination but for protection. This lesson was forged into his character when a rival tribe was devastated by ice giants. While Braum was hesitant to help their longtime adversaries, his mother led an aid mission without a second thought.

Witnessing this act of compassion save lives and forge a lasting alliance reshaped his worldview. He embraced his mother's belief that all Freljordians are one family, a philosophy that would guide his actions for the rest of his life.

The Rise of a Legend

As Braum matured, his strength as one of the Iceborn became legendary. Known for his selflessness and infectious laughter, he became a local hero, defending his people from blizzards, wildclaws, and any other dangers of the tundra. Hope had a name in his home valleys, and it was Braum.

Eventually, he knew his strength was needed across the entire Freljord. He set out from his home, and his reputation for incredible feats—some more mythic than others—spread across the frozen lands, cementing his status as a legendary protector.

The Tale of the Shield: Myth vs. Reality

One of the most famous stories about Braum is how he acquired his iconic ram-headed shield. The popular tale, often told to children, involves a great act of heroism and impossible strength.

In this legend, a young troll boy becomes trapped behind a cursed vault door embedded in a mountain. Braum arrived and, after five days of trying, realized he couldn't go through the door. He punched his way through the solid rock from the mountain's peak, emerging with the boy. As the tunnel collapsed, he grabbed the enchanted vault door and used it to shield the villagers from the falling rubble. The door was unscratched, and it has been his companion ever since.

The Truer Tale: Ornn's Unbreakable Door

However, a much older and perhaps truer tale exists, found in the forgotten legends of Ornn, the Freljordian demigod of forging. This story involves not a heroic rescue, but a wager between Ornn and a notoriously cunning troll.

The story begins with Grubgrack the Hideous, the oldest and ugliest troll-kin, who was also known for his cunning. He approached Ornn with a challenge:

“‘Build me a door that will keep my treasure safe from thieves forever,’ Grubgrack said to Ornn outside Hearth-Home, ‘and I will give you ten casks of my trollmead. It’s a family recipe.’”

Grubgrack proposed a wager: a drinking contest to decide the payment. However, the troll cheated. While Ornn's back was turned, Grubgrack slipped a shard of True Ice into Ornn's cask. The perpetually melting ice diluted the mead, making it impossible for Ornn to finish. After losing, Ornn discovered the trickery but was bound by his honor.

“‘My word is as good as Hammer,’ Ornn grumbled. ‘Even if I was cheated.’”

True to his word, Ornn built the single best door ever made. It was his masterpiece, a testament to his unmatched skill as a smith.

“So Ornn labored for ten days and built the single best door anyone had ever built. He adorned it with a ram’s head, like his own, and the one at the heart of the Freljord. It was impervious to magic and lock-pickers alike.”

Ornn fastened the door to the troll's treasure cave. The "trick" was that Ornn had fulfilled the request perfectly. The door was so flawlessly constructed, so utterly impenetrable, that it kept the treasure safe from everyone—including Grubgrack himself. The troll was locked out of his own hoard forever.

“‘You told me to build a door that would keep your treasure safe from thieves forever, and I did. This door will stand longer than the mountain it is on. No one can break it. I made it just as you asked.’
‘But I cannot get inside!’ Grubgrack cried. ‘And I stole nothing from you!’
‘Time is more valuable than gold,’ Ornn said. ‘So you are a thief, and my work is as good as my word.’”

This is the true origin of the shield Braum now carries—not a cursed vault door, but an unbreakable masterpiece forged by a god to outsmart a troll. When Braum hears the more fantastical tale of punching through a mountain, he just laughs. He prefers the more inspiring tale, believing it's better to encourage kindness than to let truth get in the way of a good story.

The Avarosans and a New Alliance

Braum's journey eventually led him to the sacred site of Rakelstake. There, he encountered the barbarian Tryndamere, who was lost in an uncontrollable rage during a duel. When Tryndamere moved to kill an already defeated opponent, Braum intervened. He simply stood with his shield raised, absorbing every blow until the barbarian's fury was spent.

His good nature quickly won over Tryndamere, and it is said that Braum was the one who introduced him to Ashe, the warmother of the Avarosan tribe. While Braum owes allegiance to no single tribe, he sees Ashe as the leader with the best chance of uniting the Freljord. He now fights alongside the Avarosans, protecting them and all who seek a peaceful future. This alliance has, however, attracted the unwelcome attention of the Frostguard, who have a mysterious and concerning interest in his enchanted shield.

Protector of the Small: The Poro Herder's Dream

Despite his legendary status, Braum remains a humble soul with a simple dream: to see a united Freljord where he can finally retire and become a poro herder. His deep affection for the small, fluffy creatures of the north is as famous as his strength, revealing the truly gentle nature of the Heart of the Freljord.

"A herd needs just two things: love, and company. Anything else is just fluff."

He stands as a symbol of hope, a friend to the weak, and an unwavering protector, always ready with his shield raised and laughter echoing across the snow.

What's Next for the Heart of the Freljord?

Braum's journey as a protector continued in the turn-based RPG, Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, where he ventured from the Freljord to the Shadow Isles alongside other champions, including Illaoi, to face a new and terrifying threat. This story expanded his role as a guardian, proving his shield and heart are strong enough to protect not just the Freljord, but all of Runeterra.

Building on their interactions and proven synergy in the Ruined King adventure, Braum is also set to partner with Illaoi in the upcoming fighting game, 2XKO. Their dynamic, a blend of brute strength and unwavering spirit, promises to make for a formidable team on the fighting stage.
