An Adventurer's Survival Guide to Runeterra Part 1: Ranking the Regions from Safest Sanctuary to Certain Doom

League of Legends | Lore Analysis

By EntGrove on September 26, 2025

So, You Think You're an Adventurer?

Map of Runeterra

Welcome, traveler. You stand at the precipice of a world brimming with untold riches, forgotten magic, and legendary glory. You have a sword at your hip, a spell on your lips, and a fire in your heart. You believe you are ready for adventure.

Cithria of Cloudfield

You are wrong.

Penitent Squire

Runeterra is not a gentle world waiting to be explored. It is a living, breathing entity of immense power and breathtaking cruelty.

He held his breath as best he could, praying the warden would move on. Little did he know, this pursuit would just be the beginning of Thresh's delighted torments…

It is a land of ancient grudges, warring demigods, and horrors that scrabble at the edges of reality. The greatest armor you will ever possess is not forged steel, but knowledge. The sharpest weapon in your arsenal is not a blade, but foresight.

Living Library from Legends of Runeterra

Living Library - Legends of Runeterra

Considering it his duty to possess immense knowledge, he collects tomes from various travelers who have passed through Realm's End. Unfortunately, all of this knowledge appears to have gone to his head.

This guide is that foresight. It is a threat assessment, a survival manual compiled from hard-won experience. Herein, the major regions of this world are ranked, from the most welcoming havens to the most certain of graves. The analysis is based on a simple set of criteria: the physical threats of war and crime; the environmental hazards of climate and terrain; the societal dangers of oppressive laws and hostile cultures; and the supernatural threats of malevolent magic and cosmic oblivion.

Read carefully. Study the maps, learn the customs, and respect the warnings. Your life will depend on it. Survival is not guaranteed.

13. Piltover: The City of Progress (Threat Level: Minimal)

At a glance, Piltover is the safest harbor an adventurer could ask for in the tumultuous sea that is Runeterra.

...thriving, progressive city whose power and influence is on the rise.

The inventions of Professor Cecil B. Heimerdinger made him famous, but it was his animated lectures and notoriously unpredictable classroom demonstrations that earned him a lasting impression on Piltover's brightest minds.

If Piltover is a city driven by invention, then its forges are its engines.

This is Valoran's cultural and commercial center, a place where ambition is channeled not into conquest, but into innovation. Its power comes...

...not through military might, but the engines of commerce and forward thinking.

For a newcomer, this focus on progress translates into a relatively stable and secure environment. The culture of Piltover itself is a deterrent to common street-level violence. Its people are defined by a particular character:

A citizen of Piltover is typically self-reliant, does not expect handouts, and always aspires to do better.

This fosters a society where conflicts are more likely to be settled in the boardroom or the laboratory than in a dark alley. Order is maintained by the Wardens, a formal and well-equipped police force, providing a structured system of law enforcement that is absent in many of Runeterra's other locales.

The primary dangers in Piltover are not born of malice, but of accident and ambition. The city is the global center for hextech research, a potent fusion of magic and technology.

Viktor Touches HexCore in Arcane

This research is often esoteric and inherently unstable, meaning the greatest threat to your well-being might be a miscalibrated hex-coil in a nearby workshop exploding. The other significant danger is the bleed-over from its sister city below, Zaun.

The two cities share a complex relationship, and smuggling is rampant between the two cities with zonite thieves frequently orchestrating raids on piltover.

An adventurer stepping onto the pristine, sun-drenched avenues of Piltover might marvel at its order and cleanliness, but this safety is a carefully constructed illusion, maintained by a brutal act of physical and social engineering. One need only look down, into the deep canyons upon which the city is built, to find its dark, choking reflection: Zaun.

The graceful structures of Piltover

Piltover's newer structures are graceful mixtures of polished marble, latticework bronze and shimmering glass that sit alongside older building of hewn stone and weathered timber. Fluted towers inlaid with gold and silver reach for the clear skies, as arching bridges span the chasms between the clifftops.

Piltover and Zaun as connected cities

Piltover was once part of a greater whole with Zaun, but a cataclysmic event split them, allowing the topside to flourish while the undercity decayed. The truth is that Piltover's rise, both literally and figuratively, was built upon the foundations of zaun. According to Vi's internal monologue, in the short story Child of Zaun, the disaster was caused by:

"rich merchants got excited about digging a canal, too excited to make sure the land was stable. They put half of Zaun under water. Drowning people in service of commerce..."
Art for Child of Zaun short story

Its prosperity and security are not self-contained virtues; they are luxuries purchased by physically displacing the dangerous, polluting, and unethical aspects of its "progress" down into the chasms below.

Powder's first step towards becoming Jinx

The true cost of Piltover's safety is Zaun's lethality. An adventurer is safe in Piltover precisely because the risks inherent to their society—the toxic runoff, the volatile experiments, the crushing inequality—have been forced upon another populace.

Adventurer's Verdict: The ideal starting point. Your biggest risk is being swindled by a powerful merchant clan or getting caught in the blast radius of a stolen hextech prototype. Keep your coin purse secure and avoid any back alleys that seem to lead ever downward.

12. Demacia: The Kingdom of Justice (Threat Level: Conditional)

Demacia cover art from Realms of Runeterra Demacia on the map of Runeterra

Demacia presents itself as a bastion of order in a chaotic world. It is a...

...strong, lawful kingdom with a prestigious military history...
- From Demacia, Universe of League of Legends

...founded on the ideals of...

...justice, honor, and duty.
- From Demacia, Universe of League of Legends

For the average, non-magical adventurer, this translates to a remarkably secure and predictable society. The streets are safe, the military is disciplined, and the laws are strictly enforced.

However, this shining facade conceals a deep and dangerous rot. The kingdom's safety is conditional, hinging entirely on one question: can you use magic?

- From Demacia, Universe of League of Legends

This foundational fear has evolved into a brutal state policy. Magic is forbidden, and those born with magical abilities are hunted by the Order of Mageseekers, who find and capture them without mercy. For any adventurer who wields magic, Demacia is not a sanctuary; it is a prison.

Morgana in Mageseeker talking about the shift in Demacia.

This rigid ideology has plunged the nation into chaos. The kingdom is officially in "turmoil". Following the sudden death of King Jarvan III, the noble houses have not yet approved the succession of his heir, Prince Jarvan IV, creating a dangerous power vacuum.

...and outsiders are...

...increasingly viewed with suspicion.
- From Demacia, Universe of League of Legends

Sylas vs Garen and Lux in the 2020 Warriors Cinematic

The great irony of Demacia is that its obsession with order has become its greatest source of chaos. The kingdom's founding principle was to create a safe haven from the destructive power of magic, which led to a society built on strict laws and military discipline. This very principle, however, led to the brutal persecution of its own citizens, which in turn created the revolutionary leader Sylas, the most significant internal threat the nation has ever faced. The very systems Demacia built to ensure its safety—the Mageseekers, the anti-magic laws, the rigid social structure—have become the engine of its potential downfall. The kingdom's unyielding ideology has made it incapable of adapting to a changing world, proving the grim whisper that even justice can be corrupt. The danger here is not that Demacia is inherently evil, but that its most cherished virtues have curdled into self-destructive, violent vices.

Tianna looked out over the assembly, assessing the gathered ranks. The only sound in the square was her banner snapping in the breeze. She gave a curt nod of approval, then lifted the banner with a shout. "Who among you is ready to fight for Demacia?" The resounding cry from all those assembled shook the very mountains.

Adventurer's Verdict: Safe, if you fit their narrow mold. If you are a mundane warrior or rogue who values order, you will find a structured and honorable society. If you possess even a spark of magical talent, this is one of the most dangerous places on Runeterra. Keep your head down, offer praise to the king, and bury your spellbook deep in your pack.

11. Ionia: The First Lands (Threat Level: Low to Medium)

Ionia cover art from Realms of Runeterra Ionia on the map of Runeterra

Do not be fooled by Ionia's breathtaking beauty. This massive archipelago, known as the First Lands, is a place of deep and subtle danger. It is a land suffused with magic, where the border between the material and spirit realms is...

...more permeable...
- From Ionia, Universe of League of Legends

...than anywhere else. For centuries, this connection was a source of profound harmony and balance. Now, it is a source of unpredictable peril.

The catalyst for this change was the Noxian invasion. Though the empire was eventually repelled, the war shattered Ionia's long-held pacifist traditions and left deep, festering scars on its people and its land. Ionia now exists in an "uneasy peace", its society fractured by the trauma of the conflict.

You can see this war take place in the Awaken Season 2019 Cinematic

...can be fickle, its creatures dangerous and fae...
- From Ionia, Universe of League of Legends

Xayah and Rakan: Wild Magic | New Champion Teaser - League of Legends

...and the turmoil among the Ionian people is making them more so. The permeability of the spirit realm means that the collective anger, hatred, and fear of the populace are bleeding into the land itself, corrupting the spirits and twisting the natural magic into something hostile and malevolent.

Ionia is also known for its large concentration of Demons. You see one try to feed on Yasuo in the Kin of the Stained Blade | Spirit Blossom 2020 Cinematic - League of Legends

In Ionia, the political landscape is the literal landscape. The civil strife is not merely a danger to people; it is actively warping reality and making the environment itself an enemy. The region's identity is defined by the pursuit of balance, and its magic is intrinsically tied to the state of the land and its people.

The Placidium of Navori

Situated at the heart of the continent, the Placidium is one of Ionia’s most sacred places. Many have journeyed here to study at renowned schools, or meditate in its wild, magical gardens. Undoubtedly, this was why it became such a tempting target for the invading armies of Noxus...

The Noxian war shattered that balance, creating deep-seated hatred and division.

Mural of the Noxian Invasion of Ionia

Because the border to the spirit realm is so thin, this emotional and political poison is now seeping into the very fabric of the First Lands. An adventurer here is not just navigating a civil dispute; they are walking through the physical manifestation of a nation's trauma. A serene, beautiful forest one day could become a hunting ground for enraged, malevolent spirits the next, its nature shifting with the volatile mood of the people who live nearby.

Protectors of Ionia | Champion Trailer - League of Legends: Wild Rift

Adventurer's Verdict: Tread lightly and choose your allegiances with extreme care. The danger in Ionia is subtle. You are less likely to be mugged in a city and more likely to be caught in a violent skirmish between rival monastic orders or devoured by a forest spirit angered by the local strife. Do not mistake Ionia's profound beauty for safety.

10. Bandle City: The Timeless Realm (Threat Level: Deceptive)

Bandle City cover art from Realms of Runeterra Bandle City location on the map of Runeterra

An adventurer's first mistake when considering Bandle City is thinking of it as a place at all. It is not a location on a map. It is a pocket of the Spirit Realm that is fundamentally incompatible with the mortal mind. It is a land of "unfettered magic", existing in a dimension...

...beyond the material realm.
- From Bandle City, Universe of League of Legends

Bandle Woods

To enter it is to risk not your life, but your very existence. The danger is not one of physical harm. There are no monsters or villains in the traditional sense. The peril is perceptual. For a non-yordle, it is said that "every sensation is heightened". Colors are blindingly bright. Food and drink...

...intoxicates the senses for years and, once tasted, will never be forgotten.
- From Bandle City, Universe of League of Legends

This is not a pleasant experience; it is a form of sensory assault that can unmoor a mortal's perception of reality, leading the foolhardy to be...

...led astray by myriad wonders, and end up lost in a dream.
- From Bandle City, Universe of League of Legends
The Bandle Tree

Bandle Tree

Long before the yordles called Bandle City home, there was only a tree. No one knows why, or when, but it grew to fill the space behind reality, unfurling its branches into the Spirit Realm until it had no clear beginning or end—it simply was, and had always been.

The greatest threat, however, is the realm's "timeless quality". Time does not flow here as it does in the material world. This is why mortals who somehow find their way back...

...often appear to have aged tremendously, while many more never return at all.
- From Bandle City, Universe of League of Legends

A visit that feels like an afternoon could span decades in the outside world, or you could simply cease to exist within the normal flow of time altogether. The pathways to Bandle City are themselves a defense, as they are "rarely seen by mortals". You do not find Bandle City; it finds you, and rarely for your own benefit.

Bandle City is not dangerous because of malice, but because its fundamental nature is alien to mortal comprehension. It poses an existential threat, not a physical one. It does not kill you; it erases you. The accounts of the few mortals who claim to have visited are wildly inconsistent, as...

...no two taletellers ever seem to agree on what they actually saw...
- From Bandle City, Universe of League of Legends

...suggesting the realm itself may be shaped by perception. While recent explorations like the game Bandle Tale portray it as a whimsical and cozy place for its yordle inhabitants, this very whimsy is what makes it incomprehensible and reality-breaking for a human.

Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story | What Makes a Yordle? | Official Launch Trailer

The danger of Bandle City is akin to the danger of staring into an eldritch truth; the human mind is not built to process it. The "death" one suffers here is the dissolution of identity, the unraveling of memory, and the complete loss of one's place in the timeline of reality. It is a metaphysical trap, not a dungeon to be conquered.

Tales of Runeterra: Don't Mess With Yordles | League of Legends: Wild Rift

Adventurer's Verdict: Do not go here. Under any circumstances. If you stumble upon a shimmering, inviting portal in a quiet glade, turn and walk in the opposite direction. There is no treasure, no glory, and no secret knowledge worth losing your past, present, and future for. This is not a place for adventurers; it is a place where adventurers, and the memory of them, come to an end.

9. Targon: The Celestial Peak (Threat Level: Medium to High)

Targon cover art from Realms of Runeterra Targon on the map of Runeterra

Mount Targon is more than a mountain; it is a divine crucible, and it is hungry. The mightiest peak in Runeterra, it is an entity that tests, judges, and ultimately consumes those who dare to scale its slopes. Located far from civilization, it is...

...utterly remote and all but impossible to reach save by the most determined seeker.
- From Targon, Universe of League of Legends

The danger here is twofold: the brutal, unforgiving physical ascent, and the final, soul-altering cosmic judgment at its summit. The climb itself is a trial designed to break all but the most resolute. It is a grueling test of every facet of a climber's "strength, character, resolve, willpower and determination".

New Expansion & Region: Call of the Mountain | Launch Trailer - Legends of Runeterra

The mountain is fickle and ever-changing; an ascent might take months for one person and a single day for another. Failure is the most common outcome. The mountain's sheer, sun-baked flanks are...

...littered with the contorted bodies of those who have made the attempt and failed.
- From The Mountain, Universe of League of Legends

One successful ascent is in the case of Tyari in Legends of Runeterra:

As the Rakkor tribes who live at its base know, the mountain cares nothing for mortal ambition. For the hardy few who survive to reach the top, the true test begins. The mountain peers into your soul and passes judgment. Most are found lacking and see only...

...an abandoned expanse of ruins and faded carvings beyond human understanding.
- From The Mountain, Universe of League of Legends

But for a select few, the summit reveals a gateway to the celestial realm. This is not a reward. Those deemed worthy are...

...changed beyond all recognition, imbued by an Aspect of unearthly, inhuman power with a destiny few mortals can comprehend.
- From Targon, Universe of League of Legends
Reaching the Summit of Mount Targon

Reaching the Summit

In the rare event that a mortal reaches Targon’s peak, the heavens open before them in a dazzling display of cosmic aurorae. Few ever bear witness to that radiant sight, far above the cloudline and beneath the glittering stars, where it is said that timeless, godlike beings dwell in a wondrous city of gold and silver.

As I see it, this is not a blessing; it is the erasure of the self, the hollowing out of a mortal soul to make way for a cosmic being. Even at the mountain's base, danger brews in the form of religious conflict between the dominant, sun-worshipping Solari and the persecuted, moon-revering Lunari.

The Solari

The Lunari

Targon is a region where the very concept of a successful "adventure" is a trap. Adventurers climb the mountain "perhaps seeking wisdom or enlightenment, perhaps chasing glory". These are mortal, individualistic goals. The mountain, however, has its own agenda: to find suitable mortal hosts for the Aspects, celestial beings "powerful and ancient on a scale beyond human comprehension".

Celestials

The Warrior Celestial from Legends of Runeterra

The Warrior - Legends of Runeterra

The strongest star in the night's sky, they say, is that of the warrior. An ancient being, thought immortal, who descends from the stars to prove his worth in combat. Never has he been beaten, but all stories must end, and all stars must die.
The Golden & Silver Sisters from Legends of Runeterra

The Golden & Silver Sisters - Legends of Runeterra

"...Though both were formed of cosmic light, they fought, for they were too alike. And so these two split night from day, so each could always have their way..."
- Hymn of the Hours

The outcome for a "successful" climber is to have their consciousness, their memories, their very identity overwritten by one of these beings. They cease to be themselves. This means the adventurer's definition of success (surviving and gaining power) is mutually exclusive with the mountain's definition of success (finding a suitable vessel). You either die on the slopes, are rejected at the peak, or "win" by ceasing to exist as an individual. Targon is a cosmic filter designed to consume ambition, not reward it.

A celestial aspect descending on Targon

Once in a Lifetime

Indeed, once every few generations, one of these Aspects may descend from the mountain within the body of a climber they have deemed worthy. Such an occurrence is the stuff of legend, and it is likely that these divine creatures shaped the destiny of the world in ages past.

Adventurer's Verdict: Climb at your own soul's peril. The mountain does not care about your goals or your dreams. It is a test with only one passing grade: self-annihilation. The real danger of Targon is that it might just give you exactly what you think you want.
